Mix contest (Stillrise)

I haven't messed with this in several weeks now...

here's two of mixes... the only difference is 06 has a growlier bass. I like hearing the bass line and after a break of messing with this, I wanted to hear more bass in 05c so 06. It seems to fill in the middle that 05c is lacking.

Mix 05c

Mix 06 Growlier Bass

I use Samplitude.

No reamping... I did slide some guitar takes to fix the phasing. The same guitar takes (different mics) were mixed to create a mono mix that was pannable between mics. All guitar takes were used to some degree.

No Sample replacement other than adding Andy's Kick's top end. I cut the bottom from his.

I used the 421 Mic Bass track

I hope I have my comments directed correctly and please take them with a grain of salt (FWIW)

Machinated
Mix has a hard edge to it
pretty dry mix
I like the kick sound but it was a bit too much
Guitars seem mid nasal
I want to here more Snare bite

Ed
Mix has a soft feel to it
Snare is dull... not bad but I like more bite (preference)
The Bass is boomy in spots (1:41)
A lot of bass but seldom could really hear what was being played

Muttley
Seems bottom heavy and boomy (1:41)
As I listened it seemed dull, but balancing the bottom will help that
@ 1:09 the Kit seems small (maybe too dry)
I liked the guitar tone

Sorry, but your mix hurt my ears... real edgy
The Kick is clicky weird
The guitars are trebbly thin
I like the Snare @ 1:09... kind of caught me by surprise
Again, I think the balance is bottom heavy

After a listen to your mixes, I'm pretty sure my mix is bottom lite in your listening environment.

Keiffer thanks for your feedback.

I believe my monitors are tricking me somehow, in the studio it doesn´t sound so harsh in the highs. Even in comparison with other stuff. Or I´m just deaf in high freq, many years of banging on stage...

It comes a lot into taste actually, I seem to still like my mix even after many people say it´s edgy...

Yep, I'd totally agree with all that. Listening to it more I think the vox are a little low in the mix too.

I didn't put any reverb on the kit apart from the snare, so maybe I should try adding a little to the whole kit.

Might have one final crack at it tonight.

The guitar tone is just a mix of the 5150 and the ENGL, both w/SM57 with some of the lows EQ'd out. I've also panned the 5150 hard left/right for each guitarist and the ENGL 70% left/right.

Thanks for the input.
