I'm creating my first ever mix reference CD over the next few days..

Just picked out a bunch of great sounding CDs (or ones where certain instruments are awesome) .. Comments welcome on tracks or CDs in general.

Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli
Nile - Annihilation Of The Wicked
Tool - 10,000 Days / Aenima / Undertow
Unearth - Oncoming Storm
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Dillinger Escape Plan (w/ Mike Patton) - Irony Is A Dead Scene
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Slayer - Reign In Blood
In Flames - Clayman

The thing is - where go I go once I've made my song choices?
Import them as .wav files, then burn to CD?

don't get all caught up using just music you know well. Find some stuff with a lot of moving panning, stuff with very low and high frequencies, and some music with excellent transients.

and yes, import them as WAV and burn them to CD

I've got a lot of drum and bass, hiphop, jazz, classical CDs that I've got..

Got a really CD with a bunch of Jazzers on it, which has got some CRAZY [good] production on there.
But thought I'd put up the interesting ones here!

thanks guys.

Add Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates of Dawn

Ever wanna make someone feel physically uncomfortable listening to a song even while sober, then Piper is your bible.
Great stuff.

Shaped By Fate - The Unbeliever for brushing up on this wave of roomy, live sounding metal albums.
Great guitar sound, monolithic drums, and a slightly unconventional vocal mix.
The roomy/live sound seems to be popular at the minute with hardcore/metalcore/deathcore bands so learn that shit.

all shall perish- the album is nasty as far as refrencing

bdm-nocturnal

another 2 good one to add to the list

if you can handle asp. they sing about breaking up with your girl friend and how much you miss her and all that faggy shit.
crotch duster ftw lol

but back to the topic, sounds like a good list to me. reference material is a matter of taste as you want to pick songs that would reinforce the type of sound your going for.

not into the whiney shit............ dude shreads on it and its produced so good compared to 99 percent of everythign i here anymore. a good all around cd
sound wise which is all i care about.... i could give a fuck about what it about...

another good reference is any tool album..sound fantastic with tons of dynamics!!!

On my reference CD I've got:

Metallica - Enter Sandman
Tool - Schism
Devin Townsend Band - Storm
Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the Great Apocalypse
Soilwork - Distance

Don't over think it. Just put some songs that you like and that have good overall sound on a cd and have a listen =)

My personal choices for metal are often Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe, Chimaira - Resurrection, The Haunted - rEVOLVEr and Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache. They cover a nice spectrum from really busy and full mixes (Scar Symmetry), basic chest-punching-modern-metal-goodness (Chimaira and KSE) to aggressive and clear doubletracking (The Haunted).

Ah.. Totally forgot Damnation.

Opeth CDs are usually pretty good for referencing.. But Damnation is just awesome.

To-Mera - Transcendental
Frost - Milliontown
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance

might be a stupid question, but how do you guys tend to use your reference cd's? do you just listen to them or do you use spectrum analysers etc? what sort of workflow have you got in relation to the reference cd?

Import the wav file into the mix is how I've been doing it so far.. but I guess if you're playing the CD with something like a monitor control you can A/B the mix with the session.

I just listen. I usually make a rough mix, then tweak it to the point that I'm starting to be somewhat happy with it and finally start A/B'ing the mix with some reference songs, making notes about what sounds good on the albums and try to achieve something similar with my own mix. I also try and focus on the parts that I don't like on the reference records and try to eliminate similar problems from my mix.

Do you guys import the one of the reference songs to the DAW or A/B it using some media player (winamp etc.)

DevilDriver - NOt all who wander...
Chimaira - Resurrection
As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between Us
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton - Irony Is A Dead Scene
Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine
