Hey ho,

at the moment i'm trying to mix my Bands first Song, but i really think taht this mix, does not sound quite organized, balanced and i cannot get the Guitars be more like "in your face"... difficult to explain

So this is the my first mix attempt.

What can i do better, any tips?

Guitars are Lecto amp sim
Bass distorted with TSE808
Drums SD2

Change that snare for a start, it's horrible and is peaking like mad, especially at 00:22

EDIT: Turn down the kick on that ridiculously long double bass solo at 00:48

EDIT2: Why have you run the bass through a TS808 :P was it a clean DI? If so get Ampeg or something man, bass doesn't always have to be distorted its nice to have a clean bass and possibly a gritty one.

Hi Siguros

thank you for your comment.
The Bass is a clean DI, one with Distortion and one without Distortion
sorry if i did not express myself the right way

Modern metal and rock bass tones often call for a gritty, distorted bass. Helps bring more punch to the guitars among other things.

Pan the guitars (relatively) hard left and right, turn the kick down a bit and cut the kick low frequencies a lot! Do you have an undistorted bass track you can layer with the distorted bass?

@ ManFromMars

yes there is an undistorted bass track which is already layered with the Distorted, and the Guitars are panned 100%/80% each side

an updated Mix :)

Sounds better! But the guitars still sound very central. Is it one guitar track that's been copied and then panned left and right? If so, you need to introduce a small delay (~10ms should do) between the tracks otherwise they'll sum back to a single central sound, which is what I'm hearing (apologies if you know this, just definitely doesn't sound like the guitars are panned)... I think sorting that out will help a lot with the clarity of the mix.

There are 2 different Tracks for the Guitars.
One recorded for the Guitars on the right and copied (100/80) and one recorded for the left guitars, copied(100/80)

I think the problem here are the copied guitar tracks. it makes no sense to simply copy a guitar track and pan it. It creates a phantom source in the middle of your panorama / stereo image and the guitars sound centered...
Delete the copies and pan guitar track ''A'' hard left, and guitar track ''B'' hard right. And then let's hear what it sounds like;) This could improve the mix a lot. If you really want 4 guitar tracks, record 2 more tracks.

Yup.

There is some serious bass overload going on here. Sounds like the kick drum could use some better eq. You can really tell when the double kick parts come in. I keep hearing pops intermittently as well, mostly with the kick.

sounds like you are adding to much in the 60-80 range on the kick. only add 1-2 db. drums sound boxy too so cut out 400 some. kick has room. adjust that bleed. delete those 80 % panned guitar tracks and also it sounds like you have too much low end rumble. hi pass 100-150. guitars have verb or room on them. for more clarity take that off.

just had a little bit of time and updated my mix

any improvement ? :D

Sounds much better, though you might wanna back off the 2-3k region on guitars, i feel like thy're scratching my brain. And also the guitar problems persist. Like all the others said here, never copy tracks and pan them. If you really just wanted to copy them for a heavier sound, use different amp sims for the guitars panned to 100 and 80, or the same one with different impulses and settings.

for this updated mix i deleted the "80" panned guitars.
Now i've got only 100 L/R, nothing more :/

Hmm, intereseting.I like it better than LoG's song posted above, but somehow the stereo field is pretty narrow. Try panning the overheads more to the side, and braing the mids on the bass down a little (especially if it's distorted, which i bet it is, try turning the distortion down, that might help the stereo image).

turned down the mids of the Bassguitar a little bit.
but all the OH are already panned hard left or right

does it sound better?
I also reworked the eq of the Guitars

yeah, the stereo image is much better now. I'd say this is THE mix for this song, wouldn't change a thing in it (well maybe 1db boost for the kick's low frequencies, but it's really just a matter of taste).
BTW, are the drums processed using Superior's built-in plugins? They sound pretty fucking awesome.
