I recently did a rough live recording session with two of the guys in my band using my Shure Sm57 into a M-Audio FastTrack USB which was then plugged into my laptop. The recording turned out pretty well for using one microphone, but we're going to want to track the drums seperately sometime in the near future, and then we'll want to do it properly. The problem now is that I don't know which mixing gear I should look into. I want something where we'd have the ability to do live recordings, so I want a bunch of XLR inputs, quality is obviously important and value for my dollar. I can't afford to throw a ton of money into something just yet, not until the Bugera's paid for. Any suggestions?

I would recommend the FP10 for starting out. It features eight XLR / 1/4" combo jacks two of which have hi-z instrument inputs, two additional input channels via SPDIF and 8 line outs.
It should run between $400 to $500 here in Canada.

As far as I can tell the differences are the second has the power socket so you can bus-power devices (not an issue with a powered interface or external hard drive, naturally) and includes a cable or two.
And both of those have TI chipsets, which means they're the most likely to work without any problems

Then it probably just has an expresscard slot, which will do the same thing (this is the one I use with my Onyx Satellite, it came with my laptop). Even though PCMCIA is slower, though, I prefer it, cuz that expresscard gets dislodged with the slightest tug on the FW cable, so I have to be so fucking careful lest I get a dropout :Smug:

My Macbook (non-pro) has no PCMIA or express card. However it has firewire but the chipset is the agere/lucent chip so it's not of much use for interfaces. That's why I'm sticking with USB 2.0 because I don't feel like dealing with firewire issues.

I think you're not ready for it. If you go with the FP10, you need to get 8 XLR cables, then get 4 micstands (2 short, 2 tall) and then the mics (for example 1 x Audix D6 for the kick, 1 x Shure SM57 for the snare, 4 x Sennheiser e604 for the toms and 2 x Röde NT5 for overheads). Then you have no more channels left and you've spent about $1500-2000 (thomann counted 1615 euros for the Finnish price for the whole package). And the mics I chose are from the cheapest end that aren't shit either.

You'd be surprised, it really has its purposes.
Like when you're on tour and just want to capture a few ideas on guitar or decide to record something off the desk.
Or for some quick scratch tracks at a rehearsal. It's just way more convenient to carry around, especially on tour where room is always an issue.
