WHat should I know? I'm having a horrible time with compression. Sometimes the vocal clip will sound nice in the mix but then its TOO loud, etc.

i know the difference. I can't get compression to work right. sometimes it sounds good other times, sometimes too loud or it completely eliminates the backing track

You have to be diplomatic regarding the frequency balance of your vocal track. Some people make a wide cut at 1khz to avoid nasalness, but on the other hand it can make the vocals hide behind the guitar. So yeh, be diplomatic. Don't give the vocalist too much 'frequency rights' ;)

I suggest cutting the vocal track in different sections of the song and normalize each section to -2dBFS or around it. Then you can compress individually as you want, but you will not require as much as if you compressed more to make those soft phrases sound louder since everything is going to be around the same level.
