i like to throw a limiter on in addition to heavy compression most cases to really squash the transients to make them kind of sit better. depends on panning and stuff also.
If there are a bunch I often high pass higher than the leads and pan them around some. I'll often have a bit more verb than on the leads to push them back a little.

I send all of my mono vocal tracks to a stereo group and tame the low frequencies with a c4. Assuming the tracks are already compressed i would have the harmony 6db below the main take. Its variable depending on the style of the music or how it was performed.
If the harmony parts follow the same rhythm as the main melody, it's sometimes useful to stick on a de-esser (or just use an EQ and notch the high-end a bit) to take out the sibilance in the harmonies - having 4 tracks of someone saying something like "success" sounds a bit like the tyres of your car all being let down in stereo
You can get pretty severe with it if needs be - it's surprising how much you can take away without anyone noticing, though obviously the wider they're panned, the less you need/can get away with.
I've just been mixing a track with 7 vocals parts in the verse spanning 3 and a half octaves, all in different rhythms etc. At that point, you can almost treat them like a string section.
I want to know how joeymusicguy mixes his harmonies, he buries them without hiding them completely and it adds a little touch of something special. I can never get them that subtle without hiding them completely.
Joey has incredibly clever ways of doing things. I intern at his studio and im baffled at his ways of doing what he does. He's a great producer and in my mind very under rated. The latest albums he's done are incredible.
