Another baseball season is upon us. Manny Ramirez thinks he's getting jipped by 20 mil a year and A Rod is getting accused of taking steroids. I could have predicted those tbh.

Anyway its time to get this started so fire away.

I'll start off by saying that Kenny Williams of the White Sox did not make the moves i wanted him to. At least he got rid of Swisher and Vasquez which i was hoping for. I am on the fence about the Crede trade but he was injury prone and i'm not sure what he has left in him. I just hope that doesn't bite the Sox in the ass when we play our rival Twins.

Rangers are in for another .500 season more than likely, but we do have the #1 rated minor league system in the league according to several sources, including Baseball America... So that hopefully means things are looking up.
If we can get a young pitcher to come through with a strong season (Or kep Brandon McCarthy healthy), and Millwood can return to form (came to camp 20 pounds lighter, and by all accounts has been great) we might have a chance to sneak in there and contend, considering our division is down this year. We definitely have the offense to compete, so at least I can have some sort of excitement going in to the season.

I can't wait for the season to start. The Red Sox again look very good. I don't know if it will be enough to hold off the Rays or Yankees but I'm sure they will contend. I'm pretty happy with all the moves that were made, especially regarding pitching. As for my current hometown Blue Jays, they did absolutely nothing in the offseason and are probably going to suck. JP Riccardi is not a good GM. This is a team that can compete and has a big enough market, he's just been overpaying for injury prone old guys for too long.

Here's hoping. Do we have some good pitchers coming through the farm system to be excited about?

Neftali Feliz
Derek Holland
Thomas Diamond
Michael Ballard
Eric Hurley
All of them are projected top of the rotation guys who should be up in the next 2 years at some point. Hurley already has been up, but he is having shoulder surgery and will be out this year.
There are several guys below that, who are projected strong 3's and 4's, who will make a more immediate impact, such as...
Matt Harrison
Tommy Hunter
Brandon McCarthy (when healthy)
Scott Feldman
Kason Gabbard (who I think was moved to the bullpen)
AJ Murray
Kasey Kiker
Blake Beaven (He's only 19, so another 3 years or so for him)

Out of those, Feldman, McCarthy, and Harrison will join Millwood and Padilla in the opening day rotation this year
The main thing this year is just to keep the pitchers healthy. We started 18 different pitchers last year because of all the damn injuries. You can't put that many different pitchers on the mound and win consistently. Mike Maddux took over as pitching coach this year, and apparently worked closely with Nolan Ryan in coming up with a tougher conditioning program for the pitchers, so we'll see how much of it was conditioning and how much was just bad luck. I've heard only great things about Maddux's ability as a pitching coach, so hopefully he lives up to that. And of course, as a Rangers' fan, any time you can get Nolan Ryan involved, it's a plus.

Padilla also needs to step up like he did at the beginning of last year and establish himself as the ace of the staff. He had an ERA just above 3 at the all-star break last year, so he's obviously capable of doing so. Millwood has come to camp in shape and looks completely different than last year. You're no longer dealing with the blob at pitcher every 5th day. If he can pitch like he's capable of, he's a mid-3's ERA guy.
Like I said before, with our offense, our pitching just has to keep us afloat. We're going to put up 5 runs a game on a consistent basis, so it's just a matter of the pitching being serviceable.

Anyways. The Rays are going to be much better this season. If they make it back to the WS, I hope to god their bats don't disappear again. :erk:

I'm also slightly concerned about their closer, or lackthereof.

I don't like the WBC...pre-season sucks and is too long...regular season is long enough but very enjoyable and can't wait towards October. I couldn't be happier that the little bitch A-roid or A-fraud if you like, is going thru this little roid-fiasco...now he may miss some time with a torn hip labrum? I hope it is a major distraction to this years loaded Yanks team.

like the Red Sox pitching depth...GO SOX!

Texas is the best hitter's park in the AL. Runs will be scored often.

We have a good hitter's park, but it's overrated as far as that goes. We've never had a good pitching here at all (with the best starter we've had in this park probably Kenny Rogers, or Aaron Sele and Rick Helling the year they won 19 and 20 games), and we've always had high powered lineups, so that boosts that notion.
The numbers for our players at home and away are pretty comparable, maybe slightly favoring home.

@muz- the preseason has to be this long. Baseball is such a skill based (rather than athleticism) game that it takes a while for the players to get in to rhythm and be ready to face top competition.

You think it's just a coincidence that your team is notorious for terrible pitching and great hitting?

Not a coincidence... I mean... name one quality pitcher that we've had here.
Our #1 starter is Vicente Padilla, and has been for the past few years. Before that, it was Kenny Rogers... Bad pitchers aren't going to pitch well no matter where they pitch.
I mean, I'm not saying the park doesn't advantage the hitters, but it's not nearly as much as people think.

Giants are looking very good. They have the best rotation in baseball and have several pitching prospects in the minors. Madison Bumgarner is a 19 year old lefty who is 6'6 and throws 98 mph. All we need is one hitter, and that's if the numerous rookies we have starting don't play excellently.

The Giants have the best rotation in baseball? whaaaaa?

edit: Just looked over their rotation, and it's pretty good. I wouldn't call it the best though. Johnson is a shell of his former self and Zito blew some ass in the first half of the season last year. He came on strong in the second half holding batters to a .232 average. If he can start where he left off last season, yeah, their rotation would be pretty killer.

It's hard to tell who has the best really. There isn't a rotation out there that is just sick from top to bottom, but the Giants are easily in the top 5.

edit2: I had to comment on this:

All we need is one hitter

I hear Barry Bonds is available.

Dude I know this...I played this game for a long time and at a somewhat high level;). The pre is still too long and the reg season is as well. I know its a regional thing but hell you realistically could start and finish the year in snow. I believe this years playoffs is already said to be pushed-on and will run into Nov.:erk:

I would ??? this as well. Though its hard to say wich staff is the best...the Yanks bringing in Sabathia and Burnett should make for one of the best staffs. The Rays have a complete staff that should only get better.

I think its more important these days to ask who has the best bullpens in baseball? Sure, two great starters in a short series is sometimes all you need. But there are so many roles now and pitching / bullpens have become so specialized. Its here as a complete staff from starter one thru the closer that I like what the Sox are trying to do...building depth. Also, taking some low-risk low-money flyers on guys like Penny and Smoltz can only add to the depth the Sox have...moreso come mid-season or October when they could be ready and valued? Wether its a spot start or a role in the pen.
