Mode Four anyone?

When we rehearse I play through a Mode Four with the original cab (not my amp). I know it's not the ideal amp for rock/grunge (what we play) but it should be possible to get something sounding at least a bit after 'Rock' out of that. So far i could only dial in Metal tones (no good ones either imo btw!), any suggestions for something I could use?

A hammer to the circuit board should do the trick.
That's what I'm saying dude! But since it's not mine that'll probably get a hammer to my head (making me more of a crushed head than a headcrusher... :erk: )... :goggly:

Throw a tube screamer and a Boss NS-2 in front. You'll be able to produce some usable tone then.

Slightly OT, but- why place the gate in front? When I've used a gate in the past (which is rare; I don't use a ton of gain and don't usually need a gate) I've always had it in the loop to remove extraneous noise from the preamp before it goes to the power section. I'm just curious.

I could imagine having feedback troubles with a tubescreamer in front of a high gain amp like the Mode Four (High Gain doesn't mean it's good! ;) :Puke: ). Actually with the shitty original pickups of my Jackson I always had to turn down the tone poti in order not to make it feep! But after all I'm picking it up from the pickup replacement job tomorrow - Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck in the bridge now thankfully! :notworthy

I use 2 noise reduction units.... One in front and one in the loop.......... Works great as long as you don't go crazy with them, a little goes a long way....

The NS-2 can be used in both places simultaneously, but what I do is use it in front. Putting a gate in the FX loop doesn't seem to do anything for me. I run the Tube Screamer through the NS-2s send/return, and I have the guitar and amp connected to the input/output of the NS-2, respectively.

I wasn't aware that Killswitch Engage used NS-2s, I haven't read many interviews with them, although they are one of my favorite bands. I arrived at my routing entirely on my own.

Nowadays I use an ISP Decimator rack actually, and I'm loving it even more!

Because the NS-2 has it's own loop, and dirt/od pedals work better there than they do when inline.

I used to run same setup/same way until I got the MXR smart gate (which kills the ns2). Now it's gtr cable - 808 - smart gate - head. Love that MXR.

i've never had to use a noise gate, and i've owned my fair share of so called "noisy amps", including the 5150. why? because i KEEP THE GAIN DOWN.
90% of my amps noise is produced by the boost pedal i'm running upfront. even my 5150 is DEAD SILENT when the boost is turned off.

that's the very reason why i'm always laughing my ass off when somebody talks about his noise gates, or how dimebag used to use 2 noisegates in the loop and in front of the amp.

Anybody tried an old MXR Gate/Driver or Ross Gate/DI pedal? I've seen them around, but never heard one in operation. Basically a 1/4" guitar input, threshold knob, 1/4" amp output and XLR mixer output. Seems like putting it first in your guitar chain and using both outputs when recording would be handy for reamping.
