Monitoring in pro tools

I've used MOTU interfaces for the past year and they have cuemix for monitoring (among other things) if no audio is routed from the comp to a console.

How can you do this in PT LE? Say your plugging your preamps straight into the interface, is there a onboard option in PT that lets you control the volumes being recorded? I never used input monitoring directly in multitracking software before because I always had access to a mixer to route the signal to but I've heard horror stories about lag and all that. Could someone explain this for me.

Im just wondering how flexible it is without using an external mixer for monitoring. I will try searching on the digidesign forums as well..

I'm not an expert, but isn't this more of a hardware issue? I've ran an 001 with no major monitor latency issues.
