Monsters Of Rock cruise

I'm going (first time). I love the lineup this year. Lots of hard to see bands.

Yeah for sure, a bunch I've never seen before (Europe, Tesla, Kix, Heaven's Edge, Night Ranger, Black Star Riders) along with some I've wanted to see again for awhile (Y&T, Leatherwolf, Queensryche, Krokus, Lillian Axe), gonna be great!

Are you guys going to the pre-parties? And if so, are you going to the official one on Thursday (Queensryche) or the unofficial one (Jake E. Lee's Red Dragon Cartel)?

Not sure about the pre-party yet but if I go it will be on Friday night. You guys keep in touch with me and hopefully we can meet up for a beer, you can message me here or on Facebook:

Wow, glad to see so many PP alum coming. I guarantee once you are on the boat, you’ll have a good time. But like PP, you won’t get much sleep. In the past, the only person I spotted was Michael Eriksen of Circus Maximus. He said he’d be back this year. Would love to see him perform some improv but I am sure his Visa doesn't allow it and besides, few if any of the bands know him.

My only complaints with the cruise are minor but they include the following: 1) the sets are short at 45 to 60 minutes. They have to be to get all the bands on. The good news is just about every band plays two shows, although few bands change the set. Occasionally there are longer sets for bands playing really late night. 2) It’s impossible to see all the bands, not to mention the last minute lobby acoustic shows or Q&A with the bands. The cruise just isn't long enough. To me, food and dining are secondary and usually eaten on the run. 3) The outdoor stage (which is one of the best venues for sound and view) is subject to the weather and seas. And last year they started roping off the best elevated section to VIP members. Yet most of it goes to waste with few people using it. In the theater (which doesn't allow any food or drink) sit close to the mixing board in the middle. The sound is muddy on the floor. 3) The beer selection sucks. But the same can be said for most bars and concert venues, including Atlanta. Pilsners and light beers are not my favorite. Give me something with some taste.

I might just have to wear a PP T-shirt along with my usual Y&T shirts on the cruise. Welcome aboard.

Yeah great info, how much are the drinks? I have a feeling that is going to be the lion's share of my budget  As for ProgPower shirts, I plan to bring several so I should be easy to spot!

There are three main stages. The pool deck, Ship’s main theater and a lounge. For the pool deck (14th floor), they close one of the pools and place a hard cover over it for standing room. Then build an elevated stage and massive speaker racks. You’ll see the dockside crane and loading of equipment on the first day while boarding. There’s plenty of standing room in front of the stage (open to the weather), on the covered sides and deck above (with an outdoor running track). It will be packed the first day for Tesla’s sail-away performance. But if it’s like last year, John Corabi’s electric performance (which is only once during the cruise) is the one to see. His later acoustic sets are nice but he kicks major butt on the one plugged in set. The ship’s main theater is in the bow and occupies three decks including a balcony (Pantheon Theatre accessed on the 6th and 7th floor). There’s a small half-circle in the front for standing, the rest is sitting. Like I stated before, the sound is muddy on the floor but up by the temporary mixing board platform (in the middle of theater) is the best sound. Finally, there’s a decent sized lounge in the stern (Black & White Lounge on the 7th floor). It has a low ceiling and a small stage, which is elevated about a foot. So only the first few rows of people can actually see the bands. Needless to say this is not the best place to see a band. And if you are lucky enough to get a room right above it, forget about sleeping until after 2 AM. Sometimes there will also be bands in a small lounge towards the middle of the ship (Golden Lounge 7th floor). If most of the people sit on the little cushioned squares (foot stools), there’s a good view of the band. I saw a great rock/blues set with Ritchie Kotzen’s band at this lounge. It ended with Billy Sheen and Mike Portnoy joining him for a couple of covers. Frequent acoustic sets and Eddie Trunk hosted Q&A of bands occur in the lower Atrium (5th floor). I’ve never attended the signing sessions (not my thing) or extra planned activities (i.e. Guitar Shed competition, classes, or relive your prom).

Frequently the main three stages will have bands playing around the same time, just not starting at the same time. However, as with any festival, starting times start falling behind as the day gets longer. Some end up being pushed back 30 minutes to an hour. So there are frequently lines to get into the main theater. Schedules are not provided until maybe two weeks before the cruise. Many times not finalized until the day of the cruise. And there are always last minute and impromptu performances announced from the stage (aka join us in the Golden Lounge where we’re going to jam with other musicians). A lot of these musicians know each other and like to hang together. The bigger bands will play once on the main theater and once on the pool deck (but not the same day). The lesser bands might get one of the two but otherwise are stuck to the small lounges. Every band will play twice (with a rare exception). Inevitably, two bands you want to see will conflict and so its decision time. Also just as inevitable, start and end times will get pushed back and occasional cancelled for weather or other problems.

Just like Atlanta and other venues, beers are not cheap at $5 to $7 a bottle. Less if you buy a pre-paid drink ticket and/or bucket. But both are limited to certain beers. On the last evening, fellow cruisers are giving away their tickets to get rid of them.

Great info, this helps a lot - I'll plan accordingly, cheers!!!

I see Pamela Moore has been added to the cruise. Since Queensryche is also on the boat, I sure hope they invite her up for a reprise of Sister Mary.

I'm old, I'd be up for the Legends of Rock Cruise with Peter Frampton, Gregg Allman, Grand Funk Railroad, America, John Kay & Steppenwolf, The Marshall Tucker Band, Randy Bachman, Ace Frehley, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Uriah Heep, Foghat, The Outlaws, Rik Emmett, Kim Simmonds & Savoy Brown, The Pat Travers Band, The Artimus Pyle Band, The Devon Allman Band

That one is January 21-26th.
