I liked their latest a lot, the demo I have is great, but all in all, Voimasta Ja Kunniasta is one of the best Viking records out there. Nothing in Thyrfing's catalog is quite as good as that one, except maybe Urkraft.
However, this is another one of those poll where I like both bands.
Other than Urkraft, Thyrfing failed to fully engage me. I did thnk Urkraft was quite an excellent album, though. The debut was OK. I didn't like Valdr Galga. Haven't heard their latest.
I had Moonsorrow's debut on CD. That's the one that sounds like Enslaved, right? I didn't lke it too much. But Suden Uni and Voimasta are great viking metal albums. I dont like Kivenkantaja as much as those two, though.
The latest Thyrfing record is comparatively dark as fuck. They did away with all that mead drinking singalong stuff, or cheap Gary Moore covers, and went into the nighttime wilderness and crafted music to the moonlit marshlands...probably as good as Urkraft, except Urkraft probably compares better to Moonsorrow material.
Read Gugs' review of Vannsinesvisor - it's a good one...
Never did like Moonsorrow that much, though somehow I've ended up with both their demo tapes and two of their albums. The second demo is by far their best release, but Thyrfing released "Vansinnesvisor" which is really really good. This is also the hardest poll so far because I don't like either band that much... But I will say Moonsorrow for now because I've heard and liked more stuff by them.
BTW, if you didn't know, Moonsorrow will be performing a Quorthon tribute concert comprised entirely of Bathory covers in Finland later this year. Which I like. I might even try to attend.
i've only heard one album from either band (vansinnesvisor and voimasta) and voimasta isn't even close to vansinnesvisor, it's too epic and lacks aggression :| besides thyrfing's lyrics give them a plus as well compared to the finns
Moonsorrow by far. Thyrfing's first offerings sound a bit too jolly and synthish. However, as Erik pointed out, "Vansinnevisor" is really great. A lot darker, different instruments are implemented, and the overall feel of it is a lot better than those of, for instance, "Urkraft" or "Valdr Galga".
