you know I had seriously never really thought mexicans were racist against anyone except indigenous peoples but the last few months have really changed my mind!
 
there used to be a lot of this kind of imagery in french and belgian comic books. I don't know how much of it was racism however. Listen to old Asterix movies and every black person is portrayed like that. How much of that and the above is naive caricature I really can't tell....
 
i used to love asterix movies as a kid.

i do think there's something to be said for things that seem like old, entrenched, awful race-isms in america to not have the same freight/connotations in other cultures (and vice versa). but mexico can't really claim that excuse. they're very close to the US and not just geographically, and they have a similar slave legacy and lots of black folks themselves. if this was some japanese village cartoon, i'd view it differently.
