more new AiC..

I saw them on Saturday at an intimate (and of course completely sold out) club show in Berlin. I drove 8 hours back and forth... Damn, was it worth the ride and the money (even though my car is on strike now... :erk:)

It was one of the, if not THE, most intense shows I've ever seen. Two hours AIC pure in such an intimate setting = almost too much to handle for me. I was so drained and dehydrated towards the end, I almost fainted while singing along. I had to literally hold on to my girlfriend...

Setlist was phenomenal: All the classics + 3 new songs. "A Looking In View" was ridiculously heavy with DuVall on 2nd guitar. And William delivered! He may not have that fragile aura that always surrounded Layne and made his character so special, but oh boy, that dude has finally found his place in the band: very agile and top notch vocal performance. He might should stick to only singing through "Rooster" instead of playing 2nd guitar, but that's the only very tiny gripe I have...

They also played the aforementioned "Check My Brain" as part of the encore and one or two (quite sure it was one) other new songs I can't remember the names of. All of the new songs were VERY dark, intense and midtempo. Kinda like an even more fucked up continuation of the s/t last album: slow, sometimes even drone-y or single-note based riffs with weird harmonies, almost atonal arrangements eventually dissolving into 'beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time' choruses - with a headbanger riff coming out of the blue, a la "Check My Brain".

This will be a very strong contender for album of the year! - But I also predict many haters, because this will be THE manifestation of an Antipop album: Harder to chew than a diamond but equally as beautiful...

Other songs being played (no particular order and as far as I can remember):

Rain When I Die
Man In A Box
Angry Chair
Them Bones
Damn That River
We Die Young
Sludge Factory
Would?
Nutshell
Again
Junkhead
Rooster

hopefully elton john isnt gonna do another freekin remake of candle in the wind for staley. i thought it was lazy as shit what he did for princess di... i mean, the man used to churn out 2 or 3 albums a year, and he couldnt write a new song for her tribute? lame..... interested to hear the collabo with him and cantrell. def a surprise to hear about that one.

Elton John didn't write the song. The band approached him via e-mail after someone (jokingly first) suggested to hit him up. The song "Black Gives Way To Blue" had already been written at that point. Elton just added his piano part...

oh ok, that makes more sense. and yea, great to hear theyre tearing it up live. i saw them a couple years ago and Duvall was a pleasant surprise. i'm really looking forward to this album

People on bmouth don't like it (surprise, surprise), but I do.

Nice, thanks for the info! The mix on this disc is just huge. I can't get over how good "A Looking in View" sounds. Cantrell's tone is just massive. He has always had awesome tone.

Goddamn, the samples just keep on getting better... I can't wait to get the album in my sweaty, filthy hands!

Its good to see aic is really delivering with there come back and its not some half assed shadow of the band. The one thing that gets me about duvall though. Hes just too god damm happy, hes like the anti layne! Still though with music that good i seriously dont care, roll on with the album!

They're really a strong reminder that metal with melodic vocals and without double bass drumming can still be brutally heavy and have integrity and artistry behind it. Also a reminder that metal bands used to actually sell records.

+1

completely agree with you and wish there were more bands with this mentality

Another new song, "Acid Bubble" being performed live:

This album is going to be fucking killer if the 3 songs we've heard some or all of so far are any indication. Awesome because I always felt that AiC was a great band cut short - glad that they are keeping it going!
