MOTU Traveler

What about presonus firepod?
Pros:
8 good mic peamps
Good AD/DA converters (AK5384)
Rock solid divers
Firewire
Low price

Cons:
No Adat I/O
Only slave mode when using spdif in

I own it and totally happy with it so far.

do you mean the Traveler ?

it looks great. It seems to have rugged construction which is great concerning portability. My Rme Fireface ins´t that solid. It also has additional power options. I would buy this one if i wanted to go portable.

Yeah... I currently own an 828 mk II (for in-studio) and an 828 mk I (for live sound reinforcement), so I don't need another interface, but I have considered replacing my mk I with a traveler.

it is a cool piece of gear for sure. the only problem is the preamps on the motu(either one) arent all that great. more money but i would go with a 828mk11 and some extra digital preamps via the adat:
1. m-audio octane- then you could use mpowered protools when you want and have eight decent mic pres right into protools.
2. presonus digimax lt(really good sounding pres, way better than the motu for sure) this is the route i went. im pleased.
3. or a focusrite octapre or octapre le. im sure these are the best preamps out of the bunch for sure.
anyway you can get the 828mk11 for 750.00usd and the presonus digimax lt, focusrite octapre le and the m-audio octane for around 599.00usd. thats $1350.00usd for 18 analog in(10 preamps and 8 1/4inch inputs) plus two spdif channels as well.
it all depends on what your are shooting for quaulity-wise and i know your standards are high so im sure for good drums and stuff youll want better pres than the ones on the motu. but for ins and outs and it being a digital mixer as well, the 828mk11 cant be beat for the price. plus dp4.5 is a really sweet program, ive enjoyed using it so far. its super easy top use and really powerful in terms of the amount it does. check it out.
