Anyone knows a good freeware wav to mp3 converter? Besides iTunes, I don't want to install a player that installs a fuckload of shit running in the background just for conversion use..

Consider using Ogg Vorbis if your players support it (any software that doesn't suck is fine with it, and a lot of standalone MP3 players can be... persuaded to handle it), as it's free and tends to have a significantly better quality-to-size ratio than MP3.

Isn't that only at 128 kbit and lower bitrates? Or have they finally improved the higher bitrate quality too? Last time I checked, mp3 had far higher quality with 192 kbit and higher, with the comment that OGG had lower high frequency quality.

Ie. for portable use, OGG is better. But high quality compression (heh) is mp3's forte.

Higher bitrate quality has gone up, the last sources I've seen for low-bitrate superiority only are years old. Vorbis has changed a lot lately.
