im using an mp3 encoder called xillisoft and itas making my mixes sound like shit, its compressing the files like way too much, iv checked the settings and appear to be fine, it seems to be fucking my low end up, does anybody no the optimal settings for these encoders, or could u suggest another FREE encoder.

ok i found out what the problem was, wen i was bouncing my mix the quality wasnt high enough, (changed to fastest resample rate, wav 64 float and 4800) only problem now when i use an mpr converter theres no sound what so ever. help

RTFM? Bounce it as 44.1k 16bit stereo wav (pcm), best conversion quality. Then convert it to MP3.
its not the best coversion quality, bounced it at this rate and did the same thing, took most off the bass balance away and boosted a ton of mids. i wish i could show you the difference but highest wav version that i converted at 4480 is 98mb for 1.30 minutes of audio but its the only setting that sounds like the original master coming from reaper, like it should do...right? but it would take to long to download. is there anything else that could be affecting this?

i don't get it.

export from reaper as a 16bit 44.1khz wav, and then use an external mp3 converter, or just download lame and directly export from reaper as a 320kbps mp3.

tbh i've never had a converter fuck up the sound like you describe, at least not at decent mp3 bitrates.

i mean the WAV file is completly different to the mix when playing back in reaper, i understand its compressing the file but this is completly changing and the audio is distorted

WAV files are not compressed, they are lossless, sounds like you have a fucked up setting somewhere in your export settings

Sounds like you need to get some basics straight before jumping into conclusions. First of all, the regular CD's you buy from the record shop are 44.1kHz and 16 bit. 48kHz is mainly used in video productions. Now that we have that covered, could you please tell us the exact steps you are doing when bouncing the mix from Reaper to WAV.
