You can try WinMX and Direct Connect, but they're really only good for stuff that's popular, and not so hot for rare stuff. There's also the ubiquitous Kazaa, but that kinda sux.
I did use Soulseek for a week or so as well, but that suddenly stopped working and the web site dissappeared off the face of the internet for some reason (although I can imagine what the reason might be).
I've also heard e-donkey is quite good, but I can't get it to work.
Any other ideas you come up with would be appreciated.

e-donkey kicks arse,start using that with Kazaa as well,that way you can find pretty much anything.

When you first start this looks like a bunch of jibberish. Have a little patience, and you will be rewarded with the best fucking music on the planet.
First thing , is to chill. Just read some of the stuff that is flying by in the channel. Look at whats going on, there are several things:
1) people are chatting ... not what you are here for,, not yet anyways.
example >> [08:40] <Godzi||a> I've gotta get here earlier in the morning, so I can talk to you Fuzz.
[08:40] <Godzi||a> And Poysn.
[08:41] <Chrononaut> nerd metal band=almost anything Zilla likes, unless I like it too, then they're cool.
[08:41] <FuzzyBlue> yah you do
[08:41] <Godzi||a> And take shit from Chrono.

Looking at this example, pagey1 is saying :
For My List(1178files:6329MB) - he has 1178 mp3's
type @pagey1 - to get his list of mp3's , type @pagey1
(0/4) Slots (0/30) Ques Taken - he will allow 4 people to download at once, right now 0 people are downloading from him. This means you shouldnt have to wait at all.
So, to get his LIST of mp3's , type @pagey1 in the #mp3_metal channel window, and hit return key.
After a few seconds, a small window will pop up on your screen. It will say something like:
pagey1 wants to send you this file:
pagey.mm.txt
what would you like to do?
accept cancel ignore
Since this is pagey1's mp3 list , that you just asked for, ACCEPT it.
It will save this text file on your harddrive. Pay attention to where it saves it!
Usually, the default loacation is c:\mirc\downloads
After it is saved on your hardrive, open your windows explorer, and open this .txt file up. It will look like this:

Pagey1 has 1178 mp3's ,this is only the first part of his list. Browse the list of mps's. Find a mp3 that you want. Lets say, for example, you want the first song on his list. You need to COPY (with your mouse) everything from the "!" to the ".mp3" , and PASTE it in the #mp3_metal window , and hit return key.
Like this:
!pagey Annihilator - Alice in Hell - 01 - Crystal Ann.mp3
Do Not try to manually type the song out! If you miss 1 charachter, or space, it will not work! Use COPY & PASTE!!!!
After a 10 seconds or so, a small window will pop up on your screen. It will say :
pagey1 wants to send you the following file:
Annihilator - Alice in Hell - 01 - Crystal Ann.mp3
What would you like to do ?
Accept Cancel Ignore
You should choose ACCEPT. This will start the xfr of the mp3 from pagey1's hard drive , to yours. How long it takes depends on their internet speed, and your internet speed.

Another great feature of the servers software is a SEARCH.
In the channel window type @locator xxxxx
where xxxx is a song name or band name. Servers who have this song or band will message you.
Again, COPY/PASTE the song into the metal channel window to get the song. Piece of cake.
example" @locator megadeth " this will search all servers for megadeth
example" @locator peace sells " this is a more specific search (megadeth - peace sells, but who's buying)
This should get you going on downloading music. In the beginning, the main thing is to have patience.
Do not ask for help 22 times in a row without just seeing what is going on. Like anything,,it's easy once you've done it. Good Luck!

Don't use capital letters when you chat. Capitols are considered shouting.
Don't repeat yourself. People hear you the first time, although may not answer.
Some often used abrieviations :
lol laughing out loud
roflmao rolling on floor, laughing my ass off
bbl be back later
bbiab be back in a bit
wtf what the fuck ?

@locator iron maiden the number of the beast
If that is the title of the song or album you want to download.
You will get Private Message windows opening where people list their results, just copy it and paste it into the main channel and it will start downloading. Unless the person has a large queue of people waiting.
