Had a band come in for a quick session today, they surprised the hell out of me. I thought it was going to be cock rock since I never could remember the band's name, but it turned out to be raw ass death metal. They don't have a bassist and their singer is doing vo-kills on Tuesday of next week. Their equipment was crap and I had to use a LOT of studio magic on the drums, I lost motivation on the guitars but I think I got them "ok" sounding. They really love how it turned out though, so I'm content with it as long as they are. These clips are all rough versions, not mixed or anything, just got the music done today. Check it out @ http://www.guitar-dominion.com/006/Evicerated :)

Lol, yeah the snare gets annoying fast to me. But it's what they want, and I can't complain about it...well not on the clock anyway :). The guitars will be a bit louder once the vocals get done and I go to do the final mix and master.

Holy crap that snare is fucking annoying. No offense at all, I understand the context of this and all, but god damn that is horrible, how can you even listen to that LOL.

Send it to Lars Ulrich, I'm sure he'll be interested in getting that snare sound on the next album...

The guitar sound is a little fizzy but I think you can make it speak well in the mix down the road as long as you fix the snare. The kick sounds pretty good also. Props for saying "studizzle."

ROFL. Yeah, the snare is just...ugh. But again, it's what they wanted, I tried to even sneak some eq on it to get it to have the pop but not that ringing, but every time the drummer would be like "hey what happened to my snare? Did I move the mic or something?" And I would just say "oh no sorry I bypassed the plug-in, my bad..." haha. Yeah the guitars will easily come out more when I go to mix it. Only thing is I don't think the fizz will go away, the guitarist was hell-bent on having a ton of gain n stuff...so we'll see how that goes next Tuesday, heh. Plus he was using a damn Ibanez Tone Blaster head with a Behringer BG412 4x12 cab (laugh.) Then he was like "hey can I use that Recto?" and I was like "the dual over there?" (pointing at the studio owner's favorite head) he goes "yeah, would that be big deal or no?" and I glance at his cab. "You know...he's actually really anal about people using his personal gear....yeah..sorry man." Zing! LMAO

I had a band with a snare like that. Its what "forced" me to get sound replacer. Now I make sure I have an E-ring handy. Also wish i would have miced the bottom of the snare. Maybe Andy or somebody else here is good enough to keep it from ringing out like that. But no amount of EQ or gate was able to control it. And having to sit there and listen to it over and over was torture. :yuk:

We have Drumagog at the studio and it has always been a lifesaver with stuff like this. When they first setup and everything and the drummer started pounding on it, I had initially said "you know, I have a plug-in that can replace that ringing snare with something a lot tighter that would fit with the rest of the kit." The drummer looks at me through the glass and says "why would I want to do that?" So right then I already knew the session was going to be fun, lol. Also like I said I had tried to sneak very small increments of eq as well as gating and stuff to try and just slowly and eventually get rid of it. Everytime the resonance would start to show that it was disappearing, he would ask what happened to his snare. Usually bands don't notice things like that, because you do it in such a way that the instrument still sounds badass like they want, so they overlook the fact that you trashed their suggestion. But this guy knew his shit (somewhat) and he was paying attention the whole time. I have to give him some credit though, he knew what he wanted at least and stuck with it.

I actually found their older studio recordings online and they are all garbage, as in the production. This is the first time that anything from the kit besides overheads and snare can be heard. I couldn't tell if he even had a kick drum on their older stuff. The guitars were unintelligible to the point where you think it was just static being played during the entire songs. The guitarist can fucking play though, so that was at least a help. Sometimes these death metal bands from the local scenes are really sloppy and they don't know it, and then complain when their recorded playing is nothing but crap. Meh, I got stuff to take care of so I can't finish my post. :(

So Behringer cabs are really really, laughably poor?

I find it weird that the Carnal Forge guys both have(or had) one. One of them being powered by an ENGL Savage?! Is there anything good to say for them, apart from the low price?

They aren't too bad really. Mostly if you get one, I would recommend switching out at least two of the speakers for higher quality ones. Eminence would save you some cash but get you the Celestion sound. I say two because the (Jensen still???) ones in it aren't too bad, but you would benefit a lot from having half the cab running with nicer ones. It's just that the guitarist ran an Ibanez Tone Blaster head through it so...I have heard that the cabs are hit and miss as far as quality, as in 1 out of 3 of them will be great, but the other 2 will be lemons. Just rumor though. I would say to get one and replace all the speakers, but then you would end up spending enough to buy a Marshall 1960a or possibly a Mesa Recto cab (off of eBay, not new lol) in the end. Or you could get an Avatar cab, which has construction like a Mesa cab, and Eminence or Celestion speakers, but for the price of the Behringer cab. Great deal, I use to have one but it was rained on heavily and then hit by a car. Needless to say I don't have it anymore, lol. But when I had it, it compared to my Mesa Recto traditional 4x12 and held it's own, at 1/3 of the cost! www.avatarspeakers.com

Behringer stuff is perfectly fine for people on a budget, they're not that bad.
I've got a pair of Behringer Truth monitors and i think they're quite good actually.
Most people just have it in for Behringer, surely a company with gear that cheap can't be good, right? ;)
I'm not saying it's quality stuff, but it's decent for the cash spent...
