The legendary band Free penned a classic early 70s blues-rock tune named "MR BIG", which was highlighted by a kick-ass bass guitar solo courtesy of Andy Fraser.

I assume this song was the inspiration behind Billy Sheehan (presumably) naming his late 80s supergroup after said song.

Anyway, I ignored this band back in their day but have recently fallen upon their genius. Yes, they're that good. I loathed "To Be With You" back in the early 90s and, accordingly, wrote these guys off as a collection of "poseurs" (remember that word?). Jesus, just more proof of how ignorant I was back then.

Anyway, over the past 3 weeks, I've picked up all of their studio albums, except the debut, and am really digging them! They're known for being "multi talented instrumentalists" but, my god, their strength is in the songwriting! And that's typically NOT the defining characterist of supergroups comprised of virtuosos.

Great, great stuff. A perfect blend of 70s soulsy, bluesy hard rock, 80s virtuoso talent, and early 90s cheese-less radio rock. :headbang:

Anyone here like (or, at least, tolerate) them!?

Absolutely liked Mr. Big! BUMP AHEAD was one of my fav cd's during that time-with fav tracks being "Whats It Gonna Be", "Price You Gotta Pay", and the ripping tune "Colorado Bulldog". Yeah, don't let song "To Be W/ You" fool you, these guys could really rock and were immensly talented.
Another great cd from that time that I really liked and now gets forgotten or ignored would be Candlebox self title release. Different in style to Mr. Big but both really rocked and had an impact.

I really dug their first one with "Addicted to that Rush" and the cover of "Thirty days in the Hole".

Then with the album "Lean into It", I liked "Green Tinted Sixties Mind" and "To Be With You", yes a bit sappy but my favorite part of the song is at 2:03 into the song with that little "Bass Twang Note" that Billy Sheehan does!

By 93 when "Bump Ahead" came out they had another cover tune, "Wild World" which I really liked.

Don't think I actually have any of their stuff anymore but they were better than some for the time.

"ATTR", forgot that one, great song.

"twang part" is the best part, nice call.

I only really know Lean Into It, I can remember buying it when it just came out, another good balad on it was "Just Take My Heart" bit soppy but I like it.

I was really dissapointed with this band when they first came out. When I heard Paul Gilbert teaming up with Billy Sheehan I was expecting a shredfest fueled album unlike the world has never seen. Well, I was way wrong. Ha! I didn't like them until they put out Hay Man.

I still think they should have made a balls to wall shred album a'la Racer X.

I too was expecting more. In fact, I had just seen Sheehan with Roth and was already a Racer X fan.. Mr. Big was a Bad Comapny type band with guitar/bass pyro... Live they showed less restraint.
Too bad the band went to shit...
They fired Sheehan a couple of years after Paul left and was replaced by Ritchie Kotzen...

I have all the original lineup stuff, and saw them a bunch of times live. Killer band, too bad they couldn't keep it together.
There's a legit live DVD release from San Francisco IIRC, that just SMOKES, and is a MUST own.....
