Someone asked for a commentary of “murder”, here is what I think about it:
A total lack of syntax, only a few lapidary words are enough to create a desolate landscape, I see a plain or an immense space ( “limits do not exist”) without trees or hills, where violent winds blow without pause and where gallows are set, remote from dwellings.
The whole atmosphere gives me the idea of a storm approaching, something threatening like Armageddon or some apocalyptic scene, the “sight getting dim” could be due to this sudden shadow that is going to envelop everything, or could be the sensation of fainting or also the stage that precedes death…
The title itself, “murder” suggests that a crime has been committed and the hanged man seems to be the one punished for this crime or he could also be the victim of the crime itself.
The “five day pain” is quite mysterious, as the fallen idol, the hanging could be also part of a sacrificial rite(Odin?), but I really have no clue for this…
What I like is the image of the birds, it’s remarkable that he says “mute flock of winds” and not “birds”, as if winds and birds were one thing, it gives the idea of the impetuous violence of the winds that sweep away the flock of migrating birds. The hanged man suggests also a crowd of rapacious bird flying over it appealed by the rotting corpse…
I can’t see a logical explanation of the lyrics, but what I like in this song it’s that it creates a very bleak, ominous and gloomy atmosphere and it perfectly fits with the music.

I've always had the idea that it describes the few seconds when a murder is committed though that is only based on the music, not the lyrics. They just create such a morbid and... out of this world atmosphere that it embodies such an event very well.

wow this is really interesting here, somewhat mystical.
Can it be that the person the song is about is Jesus?
Like you said Phyre, the person could be hanging on a cross so when combining this thought with the words "fallen idol" it maybe get sense because of the idol. What i say now don't has to be true but when you look at the booklet where Brave and Murder are written there is a window. I can't help but sometimes i see this window and sometimes i just see a cross. Then it's like the cross is coming "out" of the picture. I mean, the horizontal of the cross is darker than the window itself. Maybe it's not even a window, could be a ceiling light in a hospital(i am crazy i know:grin: ) like when you are being driven in a bed and stare at this light but then the whole song wouldn't have a meaning.
This all here sounds absurd i know but like i said, it's just a little idea. So what do you say?
