As far as music videos go, sometimes they are magical -- like King Diamond did a great one for Give Me Your Soul:
But some of them are just atrocious and don't get the band anywhere, like Heaven and Hell's one for Bible Black (amazing song; terribad video):
So, I'd say it's a tradeoff... If the song is good, and the video is amazing, it may just help give you a boost. And it gives people excited about a new album something to share with other people via things like youtube; sort of word-of-mouth promotion.
