I know you don't want to hear this but sloppy playing and old strings are the kinds of things that ruin tones.

What did you model? It sounds kind of thin and harsh, like a cheap solid state amp.

Engl savage 120 into mesa trad cab. I was going for a tight solid state-esque thrash tone but I might have overdone it a bit on the prescence control.

Definitely too much presence, dial that back a bit and I think it would sound pretty good for that tight thrash sound.
