This weekend I fancied doing a cover of this classic AiC song including all vocals etc.

Kinda blagged a bunch of bits of the solo. Unfortunately I had old bass strings and no spares to change, so naturally I thought the best idea was to put it too loud in the mix [/facepalm]. I'm not really much of a singer, but gave Layne's nasally style a go.

Didn't post it in the 'rate my mix' bit, as to be honest I just kinda threw a mic on a cab for the guitars, used shitty old bass strings, and spent basically no time on the actual mix... just some basic levels and hope it worked sort of thing.

Feel free to criticise/comment if you wish, but after spending a bunch of hours doing something like this I felt I should post it somewhere! haha.

EDIT: I turned the piece of shit bass down a touch now. Still annoys me that I can hear it at all but never mind.

Yeah really really similar other than aforementioned bass level.

By the way Dan, have to ask, who does the mixing in your band you or Nick?

Ridiculous close performance wise, especially with vocals - definitely capturing the same vibe. Amazing how much of Layne's 'sound' is just being nasal/the harmonization.

Cheers Jeff. Yeah, slamming the harmonies down helps with making it sound a bit more AiC! That chorus was actually a real pain to figure out...I doubt it's spot on but close enough. The chromatic chord progression plus Layne and Jerry's similar style means it's actually a bit weirder than I expected.

Cheers Adam :)

Cheers dude! And I've turned the annoying bass down a touch now.

We haven't really been a band for ages unfortunately, it kinda fizzled out. But me and Nick both do a bit of mixing. His is a full time job though... I just do it for a bit of fun and some cash on the side. He's a talented dude though.

Vocals are awesome! guitars and drums sound great too. i want to hear you play Rooster or maybe one of their newer songs next :)

That is rockin. I did an AIC cover a while ago, but yours is much better on the whole. Tell me about the guitars.

Hey jake. The guitars were quadtracked in the usual 100 + 80 left and right fashion, with my blackmachine guitar (EMG 81 in the bridge).
Amp was 6505 and Mesa 4x12 cab with an Audix i5 on axis, just off centre.
2 tracks on red channel, 2 on green with a touch less gain and bit more mids than I'd normally do. In all honesty, I didn't muck around for even a minute with tone or setting up...

I'm tempted to do We Die Young actually - something short but with cool riffs. Rooster would be good as well but there's a few bits I think I couldn't hit vocally very well. I can sing the song Dirt the best, but it's one of the more boring tunes off that album unfortunately.

I honestly can't tell if this is a cover or the original version. This is fantastic, dude.

You gotta try some song from their latest album!

really, really good Dan-even the guitar sound suits it very well and I think you used a way
different setup, and the vocals-what a ridiclious good attempt-loving it!

Love it man. Always been a fan of this song.
Would be awesome to hear it with a bass performance done with fresh strings

Wow, sounds damn close to the original, if I were drunk I wouldn't even notice at all  (that's a compliment :))

lmfao. +1 to this! Perfect way of putting it.

I played it and expected the vocals to totally NOT sound Layne-like but god damn do they ever! The choruses, yeah, are a little weird but everything else is top fucking shelf.

NOICE.

<3 =D

really good man! haha. those harmonies make alice in chains for me, and i really love that.

only thing thats annoying is the programmed drums, they just sound very fake (velocitywise and rhythmically)
i think this would rock if oyu overdubed the cymbals and tried another sample for snare.

but goddamn, im a productin nerd, 99% wouldnt even notice so please ignore me , haha.

well done!!

sounds great man!! yeah i agree with the drums sounding a little fake, other than that... super \m/
