My band's latest track. Fast heavy 7 string malarky

Great track, tight as well!

The mix is very solid, maybe a bit too dry for my liking.. maybe scoop some mids here and there and add some high end to get that fear factory metallic sound if needed.. just my preference for this style of music.

And maybe more bass? ;)

I've always been about the clarity really man, I find that with tuning so low I need it to be present in the mids or it just turns to sludge!

I get what you mean about the dryness though, it's something I'm finding difficult to keep balance with. On one hand I don't want the guitars getting too out of control in the upper mids/highs, because it makes them sound huge, but a little over the top and "distant" at times - but then if I pull back in that region, I get really nice tight guitars but a dry sounding mix! :( I can't win!

mix is nice, punchy, if there are gonna be vocals maybe turn down the guitars a dB or 2, and try just verbing the guitars a little (or saturation), just something that works to give the guitar tone a smooth edge

Thanks, appreciate the input. I am struggling with getting the bass to sit right though, sometimes it feels just right, then other times it feels way too overpowering, and then someone goes and says it's too quiet? I'm kinda stuck with it tbh, it kinda pops in and out the mix a little. Annoying!

Thanks Ola!

outloaf: Guitars are my LTD M-307 with EMG 81-7 and 60-7, straight into my Focusrite Saffire pro 40. Quad tracked. The two left guitar tracks are TSE X50, the two right tracks are LePou's LeCto, both of which are going through LeCab with an equal blend of catharsis s-preshigh and Lolzgreg's impulse.

Drums are metal foundry, with kick and snare replaced courtesy of Slate.

Yeah!
I am starting to hear how the guitars are a little honky now though. Mids are already pretty low on the amps tbh. Time for some post EQ perhaps? This guitar is incredibly mid-rich. Mahogany + EMG = mids-a-plenty

That's heavy! Don't scoop it. It's great as it is. I like it! On my headphones the bassguitar seems to sit quite well. Not so audible but it's there to support guitars. Nice blend. Drums are good and punchy.
Great song too!

Fucking killer mix. I agree about the mids in guitars though. Dropping them just a hair would make them sit like a whore on my face.

Thanks dudes!

Updated mix:

It was only really the right guitars that needed the mid adjustment. They were quite unbalanced in correlation to the left ones, since I was blending two amp sims. They are now much closer together in tone and it's made the mix a lot more "uniform". I also put back a smidgen of the upper mids I had scooped out, giving it a bit more wetness.

Gearman: I already mentioned, it's metal foundry with kick and snare replaced by Slate
