My cover of Artifacts of the Black Rain

yep bad server dude u need to put it up on a normal site. man everyone's covering Artifacts of the Black Rain now haha. Reinhard Klein, Sickfish, Me, a couple other's I've seen but can't remember, etc. haha thats one of In FLames' best songs even if it is very basic and quite easy.

Damn it, stupid storm. The fucking storm last night killed our internet connection (the link is for a home server). I'm posting this from work. I'll try and put it up later tonight.

Yeah, it is a pretty basic song. It's fun to play though, and it only took me like 2 hours to record and mix. :)

OK, it should be up at the same link (http://pa-ftp.net4bay.com/tmp/Thpoo/aobr.mp3). If not, try http://uweb.ucsb.edu/~tlyakhov/aobr.mp3
Equipment used:
Platinum Series BC Rich Warlock 7 string (tuned to E, sorry, didn't feel like fucking it up just for the cover)
Digitech RPx400 Effects pedal (lead guitar set on "Rectify" preset, rhythm on "Scoop" and harmony on "Scoop" second channel, bass on "Acoustic" preset)
Mike -> Shure SM-58 hooked up through the pedal
Drum samples from LM-9 instrument in Cubase VST 4.0

hmm.... okay sound, but the guitars could have been cleaned up considerably. Sounded a bit rough and there was occasional tremolo picking that shouldn't be there, but otherwise a good cover. I noticed that the guitar sound sounds like you plugged it in through a card in your computer. If that's the case, I'd strongly recommend next time using an amp/mic combination to record the guitar instead of the sound card. If you want to hear a short demo of what a good amp/mic combo sounds like with In Flames stuff, listen to my cover of the intro to Biosphere at http://www.freewebs.com/nocturnalsun/Biosphere%202.mp3. That link should work. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll send the file to you email.

All the guitar parts were right on and lined up almost perfectly and the drums sounded good, so everything was good except the sound to my ear. Good job man. :)

Yeah, my guitar sound didn't turn out very good. I tried to go for a "My Arms Your Hearse" type sound, very thick and with vocals providing most of the highs, so the guitars are mixed pretty low. It didn't really work very well because the rhythm tends to blend with the lead in this song. *shrug*

Thanks for the good review though \m/

thx man. I love seeing other peoples' cover songs because it lets you know like "Hey, there ARE other people doing covers like me, so they must be a big fan of the band." Imitation is the highest form of flattery anyway. Overall better than most Artifacts covers I've seen so far. Most end up dying through the semi-solo near the end. Good job.

ahh but it is an Ibanez in that shot! :) hah I'm never wrong when it comes to spotting an Ibanez. Nice site btw, I've d/led a few vids and songs. Behind Space has too much of the back end of Will haha, still good for going continuous. I've actually been looking to add members to my band, Nocturnal Sun www.freewebs.com/nocturnalsun, but there's nobody in town here in San Antonio, TX, that's ever even heard of guitar harmonies. It pisses me off that nobody down here knows true metal and wants to play it, so I know how hard it is to get a band off the ground. hell I'm still stuck under the ground with mine right now haha. But Phaetal seems really cool. Kinda like what I want my band to be. You're lucky you have mates that pull off melodic death metal guitarwork. so anyway, Keep up the good work Tim ;)

Hey, that's cool, NocturnalSun. Too bad you're not in Southern California; I'd definitely like to form a band w/ you.

Phaetal is pretty much dead. It's not really a real band....just four friends jamming together.

I *am* however trying to put together a death metal band in Santa Barbara, CA, so anybody who's interested here, just say so.

For the time being, I'm putting together an album full of solo stuff (such as the above Artifacts cover). So far, I have 7 original songs (although one is a metal-ized Chopin waltz and another is a VERY heavy version of "Silent Night") and 3 covers: In Flames - Artifacts of the Black Rain, Opeth - Demon of the Fall, and Animals - House of the Rising Sun. I'm working on a website right now, actually.

I used to live in Texas as a kid. Of course I'm a drummer/vocalist, so I think you can see why no one wants to play with me. Too many drummers. Too many singers...

actually there's not a lot of drummers in the Texas scene that are experienced with death metal. Texas just isn't a true metal state I guess. The only band that had any luck with that style is Pantera (originally from Austin). Good thing I'm gonna move after 2 yrs of college. don't know where though...

for computer recording theres nothing better than using:

a mixer, or line 6 POD, then plugging into something like a GT-6, (digitech=the suck) then recording directly from USB or line-in...you have to be careful with impedance levels though, because with the mic jack the sounds compete for your ear, therefore it only picks up the most desirable sounds, destroying the natural impedence levels by your guitar/amp...i dont want to get technical now...but if you have any questions, just make a post, bla ive been hoping my 5 years of musical theory would pay off haha
