My first column at Chops From Hell is up

Wow, it must be kind of an honor to get to do a column at CHF. That's a sick lick, it does indeed sound pretty Becker-esque, and like some of Romeo's stuff (mind if I use it or some permutation of it? ). Great stuff, Matt.

just great! :)
I didnt' know that scale was called Hirajoshi!

how about the one at the beginning of Lady Of The Snow?
it is a pentatonic scale derived from Phrygian mode: 1 - b2 - 4 - 5 - b6
Has it a weird and exotic name too?

the wierdest OBP has used so far is D Lochrian in rise of power but were always lookin to learn more musically. I'm currently workin on some riffs in Phrygian Harmonic-1 ,b2 ,3 ,4 ,5 ,6 ,#7

its the same thing, starting from a different note.

An interesting thing about Japanese scales, the "root" note is not the first note of the scale, but the 3rd. It has something to do with the yin and yang balance to have the root note as the middle note of the scale. Interesting stuff.

If its derived from phrygian how can u have a b6???

Hirajoashi is a rediculous scale. It was the last thing we learned in my music theory classs before I came down with the flu.

Nice column Matt!!!

He's saying from minor. Phrygian doesnt have a b6 in minor.

Phrygian is Phrygian, and it's ALWAYS a minor scale (mode)
R,b2,b3,4,5,b6,b7

Locrian is
R,b2,b3,4,b5,b6,b7

This is very basic and I can't understand how can someone contest it o_O

yeah, phrygian does have the b6 in it. Even phrygian major (or phrygian dominant, spanish phrygian, etc whatever the fuck you wanna call it) still has the b6.

As far as tabs...I'm thinking about having a kind of instructional DVD eventually that breaks down some of the cooler riffs and licks from Distant Tides, but I wanna see how well the album does (and if enough people give a shit about my playing lol) before I invest the time/money into something like that.
