Picture mid to late era Rage with all the vocals about pirates.

(based solely on having heard the album _Blazon Stone_ and and the song "Under Jolly Roger")

About Sonata's singer...

Check out these two songs and tell me if you still feel the same way :).

I liked Sonata Arctica's first cd...but their latest one isnt too bad either. Its got its good stuff on it and its got its ok stuff as well. The cover rocks though.

I'm guessing the line-up will include (in no particular order):

Sonata Arctica
Lost Horizon
Within Temptation
Edguy
Kamelot
Mystic Prophecy
Balance of Power
Adagio
Masterplan
Into Eternity

I suppose we'll know for sure soon enough...

I'm not a huge fan of Sonata Artica. The singer's voice just leaves me cold. I don't think I've ever heard a single song by Running Wild.

I'm not a big fan of SA either, but I have a feeling they might be one of the bands in attendance. As for Running Wild - they are classics. I'm also not a major fan of theirs, but they are/were heavy hitters in the German power metal scene, and would fit the criteria of a headliner.

By the way dude, this is Britt, and I have sent you some mp3's of Running Wild. They are not going to do much for you, but you might check for that mp3 disc I sent a few months ago and give it a whirl.

Hey Britt,

Thanks. I'll have to go look for them. I don't think I ever spun them. Too much music, too little time.

I would think Glenn would shy away from a band like Running Wild, after how poorly Rage was received last year. I think Rage may have played in front of the smallest Earthlink ProgPower crowd ever.

I dunno about that one. I recall prog darlings - Pain Of Salvation - playing in front of a very small crowd too.

I think it just has to do with the length of the evening, and the fact that a lot of folks want to get an early start on the after show parties.

In my opinion, Rage and Running Wild are very very different from each other. To me, Running Wild sounds more like mid-period Iron Maiden but watered down a little bit (mostly because of simpler rhythms and a rhythm section that's not quite as talented). This is true whether we are talking early Running Wild or later Running Wild since they change very little from album to album. Port Royal and Death or Glory are slightly better than the rest but not much. Rage, on the other hand, has a heavier rhythm guitar sound and their earlier stuff reminds me vaguely of early hardcore bands like Motorhead (much more melodic, though). Their newer stuff is more in a class of its own and definitely not with Running Wild.

Sorry. my comparison was based mainly (though i have heard a lot of other Rage albums) on Running Wild: Blazon Stone vs. Rage: Trapped!
these albums do have their similarities.

I think it has more to do with the popularity of the band than the length of the evening, though certainly both are a factor. Had Iced Earth, who tours the states on a regular basis, been in the same spot that Rage had been in last year, no one would have left. I'm fairly certain had Glenn flip-floppd Evergrey and Rage, Evergrey would have played to a much larger audience than did Rage.

I just don't think that bands like Rage and Running Wild have that many fans here. They certainly don't generate a lot of chatter on the boards I read. But hey, I could be wrong.

Yeah, you're probably right. I don't think that bands like these should be headliners but they would be good for one of the one hour slots (despite the fact that they could probably play for three hours with all the material they have).

If Running Wild headlined a night at Prog Power the place would have easily been packed for them. I am almost certain of that.
Grave Digger is also going to play to a full house at the Brave Words Six Pack in June. I think people underestimate how many fans both bands have in the states.

Some of my pics for this years Prog Power:

Tad Morose
Brainstorm
Sonata Arctica
Edguy
Thunderstone
Dream Evil or Firewind
Royal Hunt
Heavenly

No order...

Kamelot, Sonata, Iced Earth, Shaman, Edguy, POS, Rhapsody, Mago D Oz, Adagio, Masterplan....

As long as Kamelot and Edguy are there I am stoked!:hotjump: :hotjump: :hotjump:
