Oh hey since you're back now you should know that after years upon years of me going "MEH" to Hell Awaits I really love it now.

Only took 15 years and 2,000 spins, but you were right all along! :kickass:
 
hahaha ... it's the best Slayer album ... I can't even fathom how they came up with it (along with Haunting the Chapel EP) after the simplicity that
was Show No Mercy ... I'm guessing cocaine and lsd.

i feel like show no mercy is rather clearly split in two parts

you've got your "tormentor" and "crionics" and "the final command" that are clearly NWOBHM-derived and basically just particularly aggressive heavy metal tunes

and then stuff like "fight til death", "evil has no boundaries" and "black magic" that are past halfway to hell awaits already. especially "fight till death", if you imagine it 20% faster, would slot right into hell awaits
 
I know what you mean on the speed aspect but I was thinking more about the complexity of the song structures while still being completely accessible. Those 3 tracks on HtC are brilliant in how they flow.
 
Show No Mercy is very NWOBHM. Also sounds like contemporaneous Metallica. I love the cover art.

These albums are the ones with the original line-up except a different vocalist on Organic Hallucinosis. Winds of Creation is definitely their best imo. Other people prefer Nihility. They definitely played up the industrial/mechanical guitar sound on that one. Lots of stop and start groove that keeps the songs interesting and nice lead work. Nothing quite approaches "The First Damned" and "The Eye of Horus" but it's an excellent album.




Some people think there was a drop-off after Nihility. I still hear pretty much the same band. They may have streamlined their sound a slight touch but it's still technical, brutal, and groovy. I like it a lot.




I'm not as familiar with Organic Hallucinosis. I don't remember it being as good as the first three, but also not bad. I used to own it back in the day so I picked it up again. I'm glad I got to see them with the original line-up.
