Ok I don't know how many of you have seen me post a list of stuff for a home project studio, but I've done it a couple of times, asking for advice, approval, etc. And just when I think I have my list set, I'll hear something about a completely different preamp, or a different compressor...so I end up looking at those things and then my entire list changes somehow or another. The list is for me to start working on getting everything on it. Home project studio mainly for acoustic guitars, electric guitar amps, vocals, bass, classical stringed instruments, hand percussion, etc., etc. Pretty much except drums, but that will come later. I have been saving up already, and so I'm about ready to start marking things off, but I always like to hear what others think of my choices, I guess for reassurance or something. Anyway, here's the most updated list:

Apple PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0
Universal Audio UAD-1 Project Pak
Waves Platinum Native Bundle
DigiDesign 002R
Mackie HR824a (2)
Neumann TLM103
API 512c Mic/Line Preamp (2) in API's Lunchbox
FunkLogic RNC(2) w/ NCC-1701 rack tray

Thats the just of it except for a rack, power conditioner, etc. that I didn't list... I will eventually have the API Lunchbox full of pre's and compressors, but for now just a couple of pre's for acoustic guitars and vocals. Also will be getting a Focusrite OctoPre to add 8 more channels to the 002R, that way I can record band's live shows with my Mac G4 laptop. I already own these mics: Neumann TLM127, Shure SM57 (3), Sennheiser MD421-mkII (2), Sennheiser e609, Shure SM58, Audio Technica 4050, Audio Technica 4051, and a Studio Projects B1. I think thats a good collection to start off with, so I just wanted the TLM103 in there for kicks...heh. Anyway, I think thats all. So, have at it, heh, I want to start buying some of this stuff! Latah.

Maybe I missed it, but rather than buying another LDC (the tlm103) since it looks like you've got three already I would suggest buying a good matched stereo pair of mics-- IMHO that is a pretty significant hole in your mic cabinet.
My other suggestion would be to choose between the UAD and the waves for starters and make sure that you actually need that many plug in options. Choices are great for sure, but you may find that the money is better spent elsewhere in the chain. Just a thought

I agree.

I also think that you should choose the uad studio pak or even the new ultra pak instead of the project version. Just my 2 cents. :)

I agree that the TLM103 wouldn't be the best use for you, and that the Waves pack is pretty much unnecessary(the only plugins I use from it are the C4 and the Renaissance EQ's and Compressor). With the money you could save from not buying the TLM103 and the Waves pack, you could get a 414, which is always good to have around, or a matched pair of AKG C451's. With the left over money, I'd upgrade the UAD-1 pack. If you're not doing much outboard processing yet, the UAD stuff is killer(Powercore is good too, but I find the UAD stuff to be more flexible).

I think I've been over my experience with MOTU's stuff on this forum before, if not, long story short...I'll take the 002, heh. I have bought, however, MOTU's Digital Performer 4.5 so that in the event that I need more than 32 tracks, I'll be able to use the 002R with DP and get those extra tracks.

As far as the list goes, I threw out the Neumann, and the UAD-1, since I love those Waves plugs, especially the Rennaissance MaxxBass...it has done wonders to fatten up dull and weak bass tracks. And I also added a Drawmer Six-Pack, which will come in very handy when I go to record live shows. So far with throwing out the mic and the UAD, adding the Drawmer, and adding the extra stuff (rack, cables, etc.), the total is $13k and some change. I would think thats pretty reasonable for the quality I'll be getting, no? :)

I concur.

Don't settle for the Project Pak. You'll be pissed that you didn't get the Studio Pak in about 5 minutes after firing up the demos of the plugs that don't come with the Project Pak. Trust me.

But if you get the Project Pak, the good news is that when you recover from the inevitable nervous breakdown and buy the Studio Pak, you'll have an extra UAD-1 card for more DSP power.

Man, I wish they had the Ultra Pak when I took the plunge. Balls.

I also agree with the stereo condenser pair idea, and maybe a token bass mic like a Beta 52 or an AKG D112. The EV ND868 is also a phenomenal bass mic for the $$$. Evildonkeymaster has one and it's awesome for kick, but can also work well on guitar and bass cabs.

Well, I'm not getting the UAD-1 at all, at least not for now. I did find a Josephson C42 matched pair that I added to my list, from Mercenary Audio. Word is that they are one of the most common acoustic guitar SDCs out there, should be great on those API pres. I have a friend with an entire brand new Sennheiser and Shure drum mic kit mix, so thats covered already, and the venues have high-end drum mics for shows, which is uncommon, but the sound guy is really anal about stuff...so yeah. That will be good for when I go to record the shows. Anything else?

Oh yes dude, you do have to get an AKG D112 for kick and bass (I think these are way better than the shure 52)... I don't know how you could get by without one.... also when you get your 002 you need to get the factory bundle that gives you the Bomb Factory compressors - 1176 and LA2A - I think it only costs a couple hundred more but these comps are the SHIT... I use em on EVERYTHING -
I LOVE my TLM 103, but yeah you do need to get a pair of condensers so money wise thats probably good advice.......

In my experience I would stay away from the D112. I know they are industry standard but Id rather spend my money on a Shure Beta 91 for the kick drum and end up using a 57 or 58 on the bass cab. The trade off is worth it. Try it out see what you think!!

ever tried the audix d6. its a super good kick drum mic. i really like it the best out of all of them. its a comparable price to the other kick mics listed here. its got a great sound for bass as well. i would highly recommend checkin it out if you are in the market for a kick mic.
