My new facebook profile pic (or: WHY!?!?)

I know of it, mainly because of the urban legend (claiming that the sign originated after threats involving crippling England's longbowmen at the battle of Agincourt), but I'd guess that, like everything else that's popular over here, some asshat started doing it and everyone else followed for no damned reason apart from an uncontrollable urge to do something fucking stupid every second of the goddamned day.

Yep. Same thing with the middle-finger...French/Indian war form of torture was cut off a middle finger of a prisoner. In battle the French would show their middle fingers as a sign insult to the British.

I've also heard it said it goes back earlier than that, but never found other collaborating stories.

We American's have the "OK" sign as well which is taboo in other countries. :D
 
Apparently if you do the thumbs up to someone in Iran it basically means the same as the middle finger as well.

Now you know why they don't like us westerners, we've probably been unintentionally insulting them for years.
