My thoughts on metal today.

As soon as I saw the title and started listening to the video, I already knew that your bias towards Norway/Finland would take over, despite claiming it's not because you're a fanboy.

Overall, I agree with your complaint about stagnation, even if not the why or who's going to swoop down from the heavens to save us all from mediocrity.

It just came off too much like a sounding board for you to complain about the genres you don't like.

The thing is, though, he's not wrong. How you may perceive his coming off really doesn't matter because he's pretty much spot-on. I mean, I think John is a self-proclaimed fanboy of Norwegian bands and he's never hidden that, but that doesn't take away from his accurate opinion on the matter.

my take is I don't know many, if any, that will look "fondly" on nu-metal. I agree on the whole metalcore/deathcore needs to end.

The US has a shitty metal scene, and it always really has. I don't ever see it improving. It don't see the next wave of metal helping it.

It has nothig to do with country now in 2014..

It has to do with genres and sub-genres with what goes with what in experimentation
Just most people don't see metal or sanctuary as art and never will.

You write pages of gibberish throughout this forum
Day and night I have noticed - a shame what should do is look beyond the box.

Just some helpful advice ok!!

Okay, and? Someone can be "right" about something yet have it delivered poorly at the same time.

I hesitate to ever say "right" or "wrong" in these situations because I find it all to be opinion-based. I think "accurate" is a better term because it leads one to believe that the music scene is this way based on the evidence presented. I disagree with a few things he said, especially about the new Sanctuary and his opinion on thrash riffs, but that doesn't make him any less accurate because I can see how he would come to that conclusion. His opinion on Sanctuary is just straight up opinion and can be taken or left.

The other thing I disagreed with was the thrash riffs. Thrash is not a genre where you have a lot of room for innovation, nor do we really want a lot of room for it. People tried to be more innovative with thrash, and do you know what happened? Metalcore. I don't like Nuclear Assault because they're extremely innovative, I like them because they're fucking fast and they have really awesome, raw riffs.

Also, I think what John meant by "fuck Metallica, fuck Megadeth" was that they're past their prime and aren't doing anything innovative anymore, so they shouldn't even be mentioned. The well is dry and we're not gonna ever have anything close to Holy Wars or Damage, Inc. ever again from them. It's time to move on.

Listening to this really forces me to come to terms with the fact that I am completely disconnected from metal at this point in my life. To even take the time to make a video about what is or isn't right with the genre seems totally preposterous, just a big waste of time to me. And I don't mean that in a negative sense towards you John, I don't have an opinion one way or the other on your thoughts. I do think they were presented intelligently.

I just want to hear good bands, and the heavier they are, or the more melodic they are, the better. It doesn't matter as long as it's good, and only I can make that determination. I just want good music. I don't care what genre anyone else would put it under and whether or not it's popular has no bearing on me at all. I used to care so much about things like this, and when I heard people mis-categorizing something that I felt belonged in a particular genre, it irritated me. I used to hate bands that everyone loved just because everyone loved them.

Sorry to hijack the thread. This is just what the video made me think and feel. It's sort of sad in a way, that I don't care anymore. But it doesn't matter. I still love music and will continue to seek it out and ignore what everyone else says about it.

That's exactly how I feel these days. I think we're just burned out on the scene, honestly, and we've become fans of great MUSIC. The genre should be "great", not "black/doom/death/thrash/power/folk/etc.".

Metal has reached its limits in almost every facet, and the only course of action is to play great music, period. Ignore the genre and classifications because it's all been done.
