This video is the making of American Idiot by Green Day, one of the best sounding rock albums ever IMHO, other than Nevermind maybe.

@ 4:50 there is a clear shot of the drum setup during tracking and I noticed there are 4 OH mics in an unusual configuration, well unusual as in I have never seen it before.

The quality is not great sorry but its the only one I could find.

I LOVE the drum sound on this CD and the OH go a long way towards it so if any one knows what it is, what mics are being used and how to set it up that would be mint and I would buy you a REAL beer next time you are in New Zealand

Cheers.

while we're on the subject.

has anyone come across any interesting OH micing techniques as of late?
I'm looking to branch out and try something other than my usual X/Y method.
maybe something where I can combine small diaphragms with something like a u87 for a 3 point OH setup. (not including room mics)

if you mean the overheads, it's most likely just two ORTF/NOS pairs. that's pretty much the only way to do it with large microphones

Cool Thanks thats what I mean. I have heard of and tried ORTF but what is NOS?
The large diaphragm thing makes sense too, they would be helping with the depth of sound wouldn't they?
How would you pan a configuration like this?

I like to put either a LDC or ribbon mic right above the drummers head, I mean as close as you can get to his ears without pissing him off any more than a drummer is by nature, pointing at the top of the bass drum where the tom stem goes into the shell. blend to taste.
This only works if your kit is tuned and sounds nice.

Cheers.
