alright so there is this recording studio in sacramento that all of the local post hardcore/metal guys seem to be going to and i wanted to know what you guys think about his work. Do you like how his drums turned out and guitars?? also, what do you think about his finished vocals and screams?? just trying to get a little info on what y'all think about his work because i wasn't sure myself. Thanks!

the only complaint i have (although i only went through about 45 secs cause im busy) .. is why does the kick drum sound like its been mixed with some sort of dance/electronica kick??

I think the whole mix sounds pretty horrible except for the screams and the clean vocals, maybe. Level-wise it's pretty well balanced for sure (snare is kinda obnoxious though), but the individual tones are all atrocious. Kick is awful, I hate the snare, and the guitars, on top of having a lackluster tone, sound badly edited (1:26, for example).

Doesn't help that I hate the music, but yeah, this is my honest opinion.

thanks for the replies! i didn't expect feedback so soon, hell yeah lol. and yeah i was talking to my bro about this when i found it and found out that everyone seemed to be going to this guy. the thing that stood out to me the most was that even i could tell that his kick and the rest of his drums sounded poor, and I'm fairly knew to the technical audio part of things. some ppl don't like sampling all their hits and i get that completely, but theres a time and place for everything if this is the outcome otherwise lol. for real though, people are paying for it and its not just a few bands going to him...i did like some of the screams that were in their, like at one part theres like some sort of heavy effect and it sounds brutal. any feedback on what he might've done there to get that sound?? thanks yall

man, those drums are badddddddddddd.....

this mix is annoying as fuckkk, sounds like a very poor Sturgis/Cameron rip-off type mix... ugh..

Can't say it's that horrible but it's not very good. Honestly it depends on what this guy is charging. It sounds like he sort of knows what he is doing... minus the fact that it sounds like he boosted 200hz on the snare to 64728 db with a Q of 0.1 and used a kick drum he found in fruity loops. But for all I know that was the band forcing these decisions on him. If he charges a fair price then It might be a good place for a short demo or EP release. It's your call dude. You don't need us or anyone trying to tell you what sounds good. If you like it, hit him up.

Don't think the drums sound right at all. At least not right for this style of music.

Also it sounds like it was recorded in a cave or and an empty factory floor.

Dude I'm from sac and I've tracked 5 songs with him in the 2 bands I've been in that have gone to him.
He tends to bring guitars down in the mix, and over compresses a lot of tracks (especially drums).
He does much better work if he thinks a band is good, so his quality is very inconsistent, wich can be an advatage if your band is solid.
hes cheap for what you get though.

My metalcore band Coventry Square went to him twice and we got very different quality productions each time.
the first time we tracked with him we got this, and it seems really solid to us:

and the 2nd time we got this:

the drums on that one are very compressed and dominate the mix. They just sound really ploppy, and there's parts where the begging of the every word gets sliced off at around 2:13

and my old post-hardcore band tracked with him on this. We were happy with it since our singer sounded much better on the track than he does in real life. He made us sound a lot better than we were.

He's a super cool guy though, and if your a solid band he will make you sound good for the price.
if you have any questions fire away.
hope all of that helps!

You guys really think this is professional behaviour?
Someone creates a new account named "sactownelite" and posts work created by the competition in town to be torn apart by some guys on a forum.
Really surprised so many old timers got down to that level and participated in talking shit about some engineers mix posted not even by himself but by his local competition.
I'll delete this thread soon
