I'm mixing a band called Further Lo and I've got one track done and I would like you all to point out some things for improvements. I did the mixing/mastering and MKS did the tracking of the band.

The guitar players used a 5150 (left) and a dual rec (right).

The Kick is Andy Sneap's DW kick. The snare is all natural.
I pretty much used all Waves plugins except for the limiter which was Voxengo Elephant.

Is the mix balanced? How's the volume....etc.
Its only a 128k mp3 so the high end is a little off from the original master.

Thanks!

sounds really good i think the only thing i don't like is the kick and its not even the tone it seems sloppy and fumbles in some parts. If that was fixed it would be perfect..

Good job though your stuff mixes always sounds nice!!

Hmmm.... IMHO, there's some low-mids that could be removed from the guitars, and added to the bass, or removed. I get a feeling that it's like, two different productions mixed together, if you understand what I mean. The character of the drums/bass/vox seems to be well balanced, and the guitar sounds good, but together....

I've reposted another mix.

Thanks for those comments guys. I think you're both right on about those things. The kick performance is slightly off in places but when its triggered it gets worse. I added the original miced kick back in a removed the Sneap sample altogether and added compression. There was no kick compression on the first mix.

On the guitars I removed a lot of low mids on the 200-300hz region and I think its made a great improvement.

Thanks for the tips guys. One step closer......

Yeah Matt...

Second version is better for sure! I can't believe im saying this, but i think the kick might be a bit too clicky... guitars seem sloppy in the beginning, nothing you can do about that though...

But furthermore, cool mix man... all fits well, very well!

Seems a bit empty.. needs some more depth and 'glue', haha.

Guitars I don't like at all really, sounds very.. flat. Try Re-amping through the POD or something. I've heard other tones you have gotten and they rock.

Drums sounds cool though. Interesting snare sound..

The hardest part of reamping the guitars on this song was our inability to live monitor the guitar mic. No matter what we did, we got an odd feedback loop.

However, the guitar sound is starting to grow on me. It's "aunchy" and not "buzzy".

I'm extremely happy with the drums, bass and vox. Aaron Werner is a fun singer to produce. He actually takes advice and criticism without whining.

This song is just to be a pre-release sample and will be mixed again in the future when the rest of tracking is complete. Unfortunately, my fireface800 went tits up and is out for repair.

Thanks Charlie. I decided to remix the guitars. I took out the amplitube tracks and re-eqed the original miced amps that were provided. I hope this one sounds better.
