I need a song or album that has the following themes:

- dystopian future
- finding yourself
- technology

(basically a song that goes along with the themes in 'Johnny Mnemonic' by William Gibson ... the story, not the movie)

anyone?

thanks in advance :)

Shifting gears & moving parts
We all turn this cycle
We call civilization
Revealing hidden fascinations
Challenging all perceptions

A level of understanding
Primitive perspectives fall upon
The newborn child

Systems,dividing entities
Forming,Individual momentary
Circles,repeating endlessly.........

History shall predict itself
Repeating patterns in cycles
Organized,processed
Automated,disguised
Programmed to identify
Taught for what just to believe
Stand in line,follow
Some else's design

Conform & function
Humanity vs. machine

Brand new man now digitalized
Human minds so victimized
Building complications
Through distorted eyes
Existence is the travesty
Freedom is for make believe
And man has created his
Ultimate machine

Are they human errors
(Mechanical malfunctions)
Or simply future advancements?

Listen! Listen to me! Can't you hear me?!!
Listen! I beg of you!!
I have escaped the one who rules deep in space
He knows my name, I know his game
Now that I'm here, he will know where I am...
And he will get you too!!
And he will make you believe whatever he wants
Inside your brain, he'll play his game

I'm no preacher, I'm no space cowboy
Listen now!
Please! Don't you believe/whatever he says... whatever he says...

Don't you know that you have another thing coming?
I'm no flash in the pan!!
You are not safe, here in this place
Are you aware you face your lat dead line?
Electron waves, a pixel face
Listen now!
I am here to warn you... President X-D will be on your TV

Please! Don't you

You will never switch him off, when you're hypnotized
Don't you dare to call his bluff, he's well organized

He gets around...

Listen to me, it's not easy... to let you be
Happy in your world, and you can't imagine
What will come from the Milky Way, far away
My words are clear, we can't stay here... what do you fear?
What will come from the Milky Way, far away
Happy in your world, and you can't imagine

You, people of this world, be prepared to greet Me
You, people of this world, you will submit to Me!

Deep into my third eye, you are getting sleepy
Deep into my third eye, now you belong to Me!

Now! Is the time, together we can change this place.. for the.. better
Now, focus on my voice, yes you will do it for me!
Now, focus on my voice, will you do it for me?

I'll give you everything, but you must come to me
I'll give you everything, but you'll have to join me!

Now! Is the time, together we can change this place.. for the.. better
You will never switch him off, when you're hypnotized
Don't you dare to call his bluff, he's well organized

X-D is coming... the sky is changing
X-D is coming... my head is spinning

And what about Hydra, Sirrah, Pollux and Gemma...

Diadem, Bellatrix, Mirach, Izar...
We can no remember what we wanted, hey hey
Lies are what we once knew, time to live something new, hey hey
We can no longer take things for granted
We're not slaves anymore, now we know what life is for
We're not slaves anymore, now we know what life is for
We don't fight anymore, he is what we're living for
We don't fight anymore... not anymore...

More than tears fill my eyes, as bright ships dot the sky
More than fear is in sight, as moon and sun stand by... and cry

X-D is now in control, making plans for His new home
So? This is the end, I'm leaving now, farewell my friends

Fate lights me from within, to the stars I'm fleeing
Earth heeds not my warning, forever sleepwalking... dreaming

So? This is the end, I'm leaving now, farewell my friends
I'll break the spell... break the spell Maybe one day, time will tell, I'll be back and

ooooh! thanks everyone
damn, I KNEW I should have started here :)

great choices...
i'm going to sit down w the lyrics later and see which one speaks most to me and my choices on this homework assignment

(FWIW, i'm having to compare/contrast 3 pieces of 'art': a literary work from a pre-defined list <my choice was the Gibson story>, then 2 other items from either 2d art (paint, print, etc), or movie, or music (as long as the 'others' were not the same as the literature, so I couldn't use Johnny Mnemonic (movie) to go with the (short story)) )

Really? You basically just described every Iron Savior CD.

Angra got the CD right, but the song wrong :loco: ...actually that whole CD works.

Equilibrium on that CD is based off the movie of the same name...it has all those themes...
In zee future, human feeling is outlawed (dystopic).
They use a special drug (technology) to supress everthing.
The main character ends up working closely with things that give him some feels and he ends up wanting it and working to discover it all back for himself again. Great stuff.
Very 1984 esque, but with swords and guns!

Also, another one that semi applies is this:

About a robot (technology) that is created to do work for humans, but wants to be like them (to find himself). He basically becomes self aware and figures out that humans seriously flawed and need to be destroyed.

If you don't mind going back in time a bit..... as far as "finding yourself" there isn't much out there more introspective than Fates Warning. Too many examples really to give in their catalog.

hey everyone!

i listened to all the suggested tracks (homework based on music is awesome!) - thank you all super bunches (not even sarcastically!!) for your help...and reminding me of some killer tracks that i had forgotten about, and introducing me to some i wasn't aware of.

i am torn between 2 songs right now (both featuring Sir Russell)...

here's hoping i can get this presentation knocked out before too long so i don't have this looming over me during the fest!

- Su
(aside: i *almost* chose 'Equilibrium' as my movie, but the central themes weren't as in-line as i needed them to be...but i LOVELOVELOVE that movie, so that song SO would have been a winner ;) )

Awesome! Which songs did you wind up picking?

Awesome! Which songs did you wind up picking?

I have it narrowed to:

'Bastards of the Machine' and 'Digital Rain'

as 'Digital' was based directly on The Matrix, that *does* make it easier to pull out the theme(s).

and, as i'm pressing myself to finish this super soon (my birthday is Tuesday, and I think I would like to have this done by then), I think 'Digital' is going to win ;)

I know I'm late to the party, but I find this to be a fun thread... (probably too late for Su to use though)

A bit dated, but still a fun listen.

Rush's Virtuality from their Test for Echo album (1996)
