NEED HELP WITH BASS TONE

ampeg svx or softube bass amp room

Bass tone is 90% instrument+player - Use the best bass you can find and play it well, and it will practically mix itself.

As fars as amps/sims, I personally usually prefer Ampeg SVT-style tones (big and deep with a bit of grindy distortion), but it's all about what you're trying to achieve.

what kind of bass is it?

as stated earlier, shit bass + shit strings = shit tone, no way around it

i recently went from some $100 wal-mart washburn bass to a schecter elite 5 w/ d'addario prosteels, and i don't have to DICK to the bass anymore!

its a fender american standard jazz bass, bass player is good, so i guess it comes down to getting new strings.
