Hi guys!
First thing to say: Though i'd consider myself as a solid guitar player, i am an absolute noob when it comes to recording stuff. But at some point you have to start and this is where i am right now.
My skills have definitively improved in the way that i am sometimes capable of recording instruments in a way that the instrument itself sound reasonably good. But when i put everything together the result is mostly less than mediocre. I other words: i'd be happy about some advice in mixing. And there is especially one thing that really drives my frustration levels to frightening heights - the guitars.
I uploaded two versions of a short test recording that i did. It's just a short piece of a classic song of one of my favourite bands from the 90s.
I recorded one version with a SM57 (straight center) the other one using impulse responses and an amp simulation (lePou).
Microphone:

Impulses:

There are no FX applied to the guitars, except a simple low/high cut (110 Hz/ 10 kHz)!
Routing:
Gibson FlyingV (EMG81) -> Marshall Guv'nor -> Tech21 Trademark60 -> SM57 -> Edirol UA-25EX -> Cubase 5
same routing for impulse recordings but without the pedal/amp/mic
Guitar tuning is half tone lower than standard (i am old school, don't like these very low tunings)
I think the guitar recordings might be a good starting point in the hands of an experienced engineer. But i am running out of ideas how to shape it and make something really good out of it... The way it is, it just sounds very synthetic and lifeless.
Any suggestions?
btw.:
For those that are interested: The song is called "Branded" by Evildead Check the website, they just released a new song (http://www.myspace.com/evildeadofficial). Real old school!!!
