But daaaaamn the newest Dream Theater album is awesome! Where have I been all these years?!

I don't know, this is the first album I've really paid attention to. They were always a little too over the top and they overplayed their instruments too much for me, but for some reason I really like this one. Maybe I'm just older now and would like all their other shit too if I checked it out, I don't know. Some people I know that have been fans for a while say that this newest album is almost a return to form for them, so take that for whatever it's worth heh.

honestly kev, I was and still am a huge fan of everything up to and including Scenes From A Memory and consider everything up to and including Falling Into Infinity classic albums, but they have fallen off so bad that I cannot get through an album anymore. And it's not the music or style but just the songwriting and the lack of effort I hear. Sounds like old guys with an established fan base that will buy anything they put out; just renting an expensive studio for a couple months to jam, write and records songs, than it sounds like hungry musicians who really put a lot of effort into making something fresh and interesting artistically.

that's my take on the whole thing, and I honestly find the last several albums to be worthless garbage.

I realized a couple days ago that Circus Maximus is just Dream Theater.

The new album isn't that bad. I liked a few songs.

Cool, good insight. I guess I should check out the rest of their stuff. It'll be interesting to discover these guys backwards. What album should I start with?

The new album is ok. Nothing special, but still good enough for a few listens.
I mostly stick with the first three albums

Images and Words
Awake

without Kevin Moore (he wrote the vocal parts too) this band is not perfect anymore.

Im also one of those people who is super anti-dream theatre. I havent heard the new album... but maybe I'll give it a listen. If I end up liking it, Im gonna get a hard time from a few people :p

sums up my feelings nicely.

and I vote you listen to Awake.

as classic as the rest of the above mentioned albums are, it's the one with the most rocking out, and the least cheese.

Space-Dye Vest is an awesome song. The best DT song, easily.

Awake is ok, half of it is complete filler, but some of the songs are pretty good: 6:00, Caught in a Web, Lie and the aforementioned Space-Dye Vest.
