I am still recovering from this one. Thanks to my old guitar player Joe Chawki I was exposed to both of these amazing bands several years ago. Ive had the privilege of opening for them both in NYC and have been a rabid attendee at every show I could get to.
Nevermore is nothing short of remarkable, the musicianship and songwriting have steadily improved in a way that boggles the mind. Jeff Loomis without a doubt is one of the best guitar players I have ever seen. His speed, dexterity and control are only outmatched by his sense of taste- only playing whats necessary and knowing when and when not to shred. Van has made leaps and bounds as a drummer over the past few years and it blows me away to see another guitarist up there doing the harmony for solo in River Dragon. The songs are always deep, emotional and heavy and if you have any connection to the history behind some of the lyrics it can really change the way you look at your own life.
Opeth is possibly the most dynamic band in the history of rock. Seriously a whisper to a scream! The music was glorious, majestic and overpowering as well as sweet and delicate.
I know Im sounding a bit over the top with this but I was really knocked out by this bill.
This was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I am so happy to see both of these bands reach this level of success but still be underground enough to play more intimate club settings. For me, the Gigantour spot for Nevermore pales in comparison to a bill like this.
Was anyone else at this show? Im interested to see what others felt about it.
