Given it a few spins now. It's definitely at least in the "acceptable" category for me, I think there are a lot of nice ideas in there, and parts that are drawn from various eras of the band's sound. That intro melody could have been on any of their earliest records, then the riff that kicks in afterwards feels to me like it could have come from SOAPF.
It doesn't have the oversaturated production of Reroute or Come Clarity giving it that "white noise" feel, the guitars are a lot more melodic generally than Soundtrack, and it packs more of a punch than ASOP, Siren Charms and Battles. The verses actually sound a lot more like what I -hoped- Siren Charms would sound like, a "clean" In Flames sound that feels kinda spacious and haunted, but with something heavier under the surface, threatening to break loose... Basically, if you could blend The Attic and Jester Script Transfigured, that would be my ideal way for In Flames to balance incorporating their old and new sounds, and while this isn't -quite- there, for me, in parts it's enjoyably close.
Pre-chorus is great, the heavy parts of this record (all four songs so far) sound as close to their old melodic death metal sound as they've come since they began to depart from it. It's great to hear Anders' low harsh vocals so prominently after two decades of criminally underusing them.
I agree with the consensus that the vocals are a wee bit overproduced, and in parts it suffers from the "flow of the lyrics doesn't fit well with the music" problem that plagued Siren Charms and Battles, also some of the nicest ideas are a bit underdeveloped, especially the solo, which has a fantastic timbre but could do with being at least twice the length... But, overall, I feel like there's enough great IF stuff in there to compensate for the imperfections. Not my favourite of the singles so far, but definitely still good enough to keep me on board.
