New album Foregone out February 2023

This sonf would be far better with an extended length. It feels like seven to eight minutes is what it deserved to be developed to its full potential. Instead, it remains being a collection of sounds that sound nice but feel uncomplete.

I don't agree with that it feels incomplete but would love to see 7-8 minutes version of this song and yeah that would've been awesome too.

PS: DM me for the song

Stone Sour's A Rumor of Skin chorus and Do Me a Favor outro have the exactly same melody. They are both from a double concept album. Travellers pt1, Travellers pt2 and The Conflagration from the same band and album ( the "I'm on my own" part).
Empyreal pt1 and pt2 from Sylosis have the same amazing pattern with sweep picking. Both of them from their probably best album The Edge of Earth (amazing band, check them if you don't know them).
Architects use quite often the same lyrics on different songs on purpose.
Vermillion pt1 and pt2 from Slipknot have similar ideas.
I could say Tears Don't Fall and Tears Don't Fall pt2 from Bullet For My Valentine, but pt2 was a pure failure to repeat the success of the first one.
If I keep thinking, I will probably find more examples.

Nice one. :D But I really enjoyed this one, was expecting a full acoustic one but this version is still awesome.

The autotuning is really hard for me to ignore. If you are OK with it then yeah, it's a decent track. My only other slight issue is the wahhh on the solo. It's a shame Bjorn hasn't cut that out by now. There's no real need for it.

I’m not a big fan of autotune but this one doesnt feels like its a big thing. Last part of I Am Above and Through My Eyes had more autotune and that feels weird I agree. I also agree with wah issue, he can write good solos for sure but it really is a hit and miss, though I like this ones solo.

Song is full of melodies which I expect from IF, I heard 3-4 guitars at some point. My expectations from this album has levelled up pretty high at this point.

I do agree with Eochaid that it's the most "IF" sounding track so far. Sounds like something that could have evolved from ITM, rather than 90s MDM tribute tracks.

This is how it makes me feel...

How to describe it?

It's like a collection of melodies that have not been fully developed. They're finished before we are able to enjoy them. They need more time than they get.

A different band would have given them the length that they deserve. But Bjorn is not that kind of guy. In my opinion, he doesn't give the songs the love, respect, that they deserve.

Still, this is something that I could enjoy.

Really not sure what to make out of this one.

Positives: sounds fresh, a lot of changes, melodies, riffs, energetic drumming...all the ingredients for a good song. But...

Negatives: autotuned vocals kills it for me, overall production is too artificial and plastic (drums souns is almost midi), none of the cool ideas are developed further and solo goes downhill the moment you start thinking something nice is about to happen.

First two singles were not offensive, but sounded like they were trying to cover a random song from a different no name band in the specific genre. Last two have so much good stuff going on, but everything feels so incomplete and unfinished.

Not bad, I can listen to this and all, but do I have the need to have these songs on repeat? Nope.

Agree with almost everything A88 said here, feel like this song could be much more.

Sadly, editing on the vocals is too jarring for me in this one, so much that I don't see myself going back to the song much (Battles sends its regards).

man, I miss Anders' weak Passenger/STYE cleans these days

I've listened to it now and my first reaction is... Interesting ideas but it's too short. I like a lot of what's going on, but it feels a bit rushed. The solo isn't very good, but I really like the change of pace from the previous singles. Not my favorite of the songs released so far, but it isn't a massive sonic departure in the way Truth and House were as follow up singles and so i'm slowly starting to believe we may get a somewhat consistent album for a change

Yeah, for me Anders' cleans in the R2R/STYE era were an essential part of the IF sound. Not a whole lot of vocalists sounded like him. I get what he's going for and singing is not uncommon in Swedish metal these days -- cleans have become a huge part of Soilwork's sound, Stanne is belting out more of them than usual, etc -- but I don't think this sound works for him and it ends up reminding me of commercial bands more than anything.

Coheed and Cambria do a lot of recurring melodies, bring back full lyrical refrains and also have at least one instance of a two-part song split over an album (Apollo I and Apollo II on their third album).

Anyway, I need to listen to this song...

Given it a few spins now. It's definitely at least in the "acceptable" category for me, I think there are a lot of nice ideas in there, and parts that are drawn from various eras of the band's sound. That intro melody could have been on any of their earliest records, then the riff that kicks in afterwards feels to me like it could have come from SOAPF.

It doesn't have the oversaturated production of Reroute or Come Clarity giving it that "white noise" feel, the guitars are a lot more melodic generally than Soundtrack, and it packs more of a punch than ASOP, Siren Charms and Battles. The verses actually sound a lot more like what I -hoped- Siren Charms would sound like, a "clean" In Flames sound that feels kinda spacious and haunted, but with something heavier under the surface, threatening to break loose... Basically, if you could blend The Attic and Jester Script Transfigured, that would be my ideal way for In Flames to balance incorporating their old and new sounds, and while this isn't -quite- there, for me, in parts it's enjoyably close.

Pre-chorus is great, the heavy parts of this record (all four songs so far) sound as close to their old melodic death metal sound as they've come since they began to depart from it. It's great to hear Anders' low harsh vocals so prominently after two decades of criminally underusing them.

I agree with the consensus that the vocals are a wee bit overproduced, and in parts it suffers from the "flow of the lyrics doesn't fit well with the music" problem that plagued Siren Charms and Battles, also some of the nicest ideas are a bit underdeveloped, especially the solo, which has a fantastic timbre but could do with being at least twice the length... But, overall, I feel like there's enough great IF stuff in there to compensate for the imperfections. Not my favourite of the singles so far, but definitely still good enough to keep me on board.

Just heard the song. I'm not sold on Anders' vocal melodies and the autotune drags it down, but I have no complaints regarding the instrumentation. It feels inspired the way their music hasn't for the past couple of records.

There's another IF song this really reminds me of, but I can't think of it at the moment (no, it's not Foregone Pt 1). Probably Moonshield, especially the chorus if you listen past the clean singing. It has the same overall vibe and paints a similar picture, in my opinion.

I tend to think the solos in their recent stuff have been pretty ho hum, but I actually liked this one.

The lack of rhyming in the chorus was good, because imo a lot of Anders' worst lyrics come from trying to rhyme lines in really tortured or cheesy ways.

How much time until Bjorn give us what it feels like a fully developed song instead of a bunch of ideas that are quickly dismissed?

It's okay-ish. I totally agree that some of the parts might have been prolonged just for a little bit, there definitely was potential for a 6 minutes track.
Once again, harsh vocals are top notch, I really wish we could have just the backing vocals in the last chorus instead of this godforsaken autotune. Speaking of which, at first I thought it will ruin the track for me, but after a couple of spins I've learnt that it's a guilty pleasure earworm.

Other than that, big thumbs up for the consistent gloomy atmosphere, looks like they're not throwing ideas all over the album like they did with ITM. Really love the intro (exactly 1 minute without Anders - when was the last time we got that?), though I was hoping for the acoustic section we've heard in Chicago concert. Again, sad to see the intro didn't get similar timespan. Solo is typical Bjorn, a nice tease in the beginning without expanding it further. Shame, really, if one track of the already released could benefit from a proper solo, I'd say that's the one.

It's sad to see Anders (+ fat 'murican) being the weakest link once again, while he was the first reason that brought me to IF. If he stuck to his flawed clean vocals this track could be something more. That being said, it's a fantastic background music, when I wasn't focused on the autotune the overall feeling is pretty nice.

Agree that it would be better if Anders went back to Reroute/STYE style cleans. They weren't good by any stretch but they were earnest and charming in their own way. Autotuned Anders is just annoying, but he seems to think that's peak sound for his clean vocals unfortunately. His cleans were fine on SOAPF too but I think that owes very strongly to the production, so unless you replicate that then it probably wouldn't work.

So general consensus on this track seems to range from 'One of the best songs IF have ever released' to 'Decent with a few unfortunate flaws'. For the most commercial track released so far that's a good sign I think.
