New album Foregone out February 2023

I won’t lie, I thought the ASOP bird was hung in a noose for a second. That would’ve been so fucked, but more metal than anything they’ve done in a decade.

Honestly cool to see it back though, even if it is a weird mascot. There’s something about it I just kinda like.

It feels surprisingly inspired for a band who’s kinda just coasted artistically for a while. I’m kinda surprised there’s no big sculpture for Clayman or some shit, but after C2020, maybe it’s better off not happening.

Good on them for going above bare minimum. It's been a while.

I remember when ITM first came out I didn't care much for Voices. Hearing it live totally changed how I felt about the song though, in a positive way.

As far as I understand from Anders’ latest IG post, it looks like Foregone touring cycle come to an end. Ready for a new thread and a new album!

Saw this on YouTube earlier, I thought I'd listen to part of a song to sample how it sounded. I ended up watching the full thing in one go - I thought it was excellent. Nothing pre-Clayman on the setlist, which would normally kill a lot of my interest, but the performance was so good that I didn't mind that it was basically a selection from Foregone plus The Hits. The whole band are on top of their game and all of them really seem to be enjoying themselves, it doesn't feel like they're bored with performing, and that energy is mirrored by the crowd who seem to really love them (which is doubly cool for a mixed festival crowd rather than an audience of specifically In Flames fans). The crowdsurfing during Trigger is a sight to see.

It seemed like Anders was having the time of his life, especially during Trigger and OFTW. It’s definitely not their best performance, but they absolutely put on a fantastic show.

I love this shot of Anders and the horizon during Trigger— It just feels like an “everything’s been worth it” kind of moment if that makes sense. I mean, Battles wasn’t, but we can forget about that for the moment. The setlist didn’t have anything from it or SC, after all.

A setlist I genuinely have zero interest in, as I have zero interest in Foregone and the other stuff they've done so many times before. However, I'd rather they play the stuff they want to play as opposed to pretending to care about playing the older stuff. Maybe now that The Halo Effect hype has faded into the background they don't feel so threatened.

As for SC and Battles, seems they will go the way of STYE. A token song occasionally played live (Everything's Gone from SC, The End from Battles) but otherwise totally ignored. Discography filler, as they were always destined to be.

I had similar thoughts on some of the shots of him looking out over the crowd with that sunset in the background. Obviously, I'm not inside their heads, but it felt like a moment that must be really reaffirming in an industry where although the layperson's perspective is that artists are the ultimate examples of success because they get to do what they love for a living, the reality is that there is a grind and it would certainly be possible to become jaded.

I got the sense watching that performance of Trigger that Anders was really immersed in the joy of what he does, and he wasn't the only one. You could quite frequently see various members of the band (notably, but not exclusively Björn and Chris) singing along to the songs as they played, showing how into it they were.

@DE4life , I totally understand that the setlist wouldn't motivate you to watch it. I've done my fair share of bemoaning IF festival and co-headlining setlists, and I do find the total lack of pre-Clayman material disappointing, but for my money it's definitely not the worst I've seen. As you both have pointed out, Siren Charms and Battles get a complete bypass, and I'd argue that all the post-2000 IF material sounds better here than the studio versions: rawer, heavier and more like melodic death metal.

IF performances from the past 6 years or so have been some of the best since the early days. Setlists unfortunately not so much. It's cool when they throw in an old track that hadn't been heard in a while, but it still doesn't hit as hard for me simply because so many of the band members I grew up with are gone and I have zero attachment to the replacements.

Honestly, the way Anders and Bjorn behaved with THE, combined with their infatuation with Benson, has really put me off the pair of them. I respect what they did up until 2011, but that was 14 years ago.

These days, I'm not listening to anything from them post ASOP, and only one song from ASOP, so, maybe it would be most precise to say that I'm not listening to anything post CC.

But it would be even more precise to say that I'm almost not listening to them. To he fair, both THE albums are enough to cover my share of melodeath these past months.

I haven’t really listened to the band recently either, but that’s not really because of anything having to do with the band, I’ve just been more interested in different music lately— Boston Manor, old ERRA (Augment is genuinely a 10/10 album for me), the new Clipse album. It’s not even me being disinterested in Foregone (Though I do want to see the band move on to something more interesting), I just haven’t listened to melodeath or anything really heavy lately, save for Augment and Neverbloom.
Edit: And old Blood Stain Child, but that’s mainly as a palette cleanser because their newest stuff mainly fucking sucks, like, about as much as the newest Cyhra stuff.

Maybe I’d latch on tighter to a new album if it wasn’t like Foregone, but maybe I wouldn’t. I just don’t feel like there’s much to talk about or even feel regarding the band right now. ITM held more of my interest for so long because it was something I did really enjoy it and find it new and invigorating back when it came out, though I’m not sure I’d feel that now. I just want to listen to stuff with a fresh, natural, and authentic energy at the moment. I’m hoping the band releases something to bring my excitement back soon, but they’ve rarely released stuff in a two year span for a long while now, so I’ll keep my expectations realistic. In fairness to the band though, it’s not just a them issue for me, even Dark Tranquillity and THE aren’t quite hitting the spot for me when they normally would.

I'm keeping a varied playlist. From the soundtrack to Journey to Dimension Zero (just examples of the two extremes). And I have added a good amount of old IF music but, for some reason, it's like I've lost interest (at least at this time) in listening to them. THE still keep my excitement so it's ok. I mean, it's like keeping in touch with a fork of the band.

But I feel a personal disconnection with the new generations of metal listeners. I mean, IF are more popular than ever after releasing 4 albums that are a bland mess of nothingness. I guess that their connections with Benson had a lot to do with it but also the background for the new metal generations. I grew up listening to Iron Maiden. A 30 years old dude grew up thinking that Linkin Park was a metal band. That makes a difference. IF, like lots of the current most popular metal bands habe broken the frontier that used to separate metal music from pop music. It's just the same formula, almost the same melodies but with heavier musical sound. I'm not saying that's bad per se. But, when I see music so irrelevant being praised I wonder what has gone wrong. I, really, see their setlists and wonder what's good about them. Then, I see their live shows and wonder what's so good about them. Maybe, expectations are important. Or, maybe, I'm too old school to understand that.
