New Cephalic Carnage track

Holy shit... I just realized that because of the hi-hat accents, that blastbeat in the intro is 100% one-footed... fucking Christ - John Merryman is a god!

Yeah no shit, i got to play a show with them and John is a fuckin beast! not to mention the rest of the guys if you havent seen em live you need to:notworthy

Thanks guys, glad you're digging it.

This was a strange project. Cephalic used part of their recording budget to put together a sizable project studio. We tracked drums at their place with my gear in a little under 10 days. About 2.5 times what any other album took, mostly because 80% of the material was arranged and drum lines written in the studio.

The next 2.5 weeks we're spent setting up their studio. Getting software installed, working out bugs, etc. All in the middle of a crazy blizzards, causing even more delays. After the setup was finished it was all left to a few musicians with no producer to crack the whip. So there went the next 5 weeks. :erk:

Lenard and I tracked vocals 1 or 2 days a week during the guitar tracking. Some of the time only having scratch guitars, which kinda sucked. I had a few days where I could sit down with guitars and bass, fix parts here and there, and throw in a few ideas. Guitars and vocals more or less finished on the same day... The day before I was supposed to ship the final mix. :waah:

I had to shuffle some other projects around to even get the 4 days I did. Didn't even bring vocals up until the day before I had to ship the masters. All adding up the the most stressful project I've ever been a part of. I still hear spots I would have fucked with. Nothing major, just the odd vocal that's too loud or too quiet, or a spot where I could have done some cool FX or automation.

Guitars were 4 tracks of Keeley TS9-DX > Dual Rec > Mesa Traditional cab. We used the same guitars we did for Anomiles. It's a Ran the guys bought off of Peter from Vader after a tour a few years ago. Fiberglass neck with a single 81. Actually think we might use something else next time. Guitars gave me a bit of trouble at reamp time.

Bass was his custom 6 string Warrior > Aguilar Head (DBX 160 Insert) > Acou-Groove Cab. I used a 421 into the Spider and a 57 into my SCA N72 (Neve clone) pushing the gain pretty hard.

Vocals are about 70% SM7 > Spider > RNC. Some of the ultra low stuff is a 57 > SCA A12 (API Clone) > RNC.

I think I have some shitty phone pictures of the bass and guitar setups. I'll look for them today and post them on the blog page. Sorry for not posting sooner. I have a good excuse, I promise...

Thanks for the breakdown Dave:kickass: What mics did you use on the Toms or are the replaced either way i fuckin love em!

jesus christ i've always wanted to hear this band sound this good and now they do. The guitars on anomalies were too buzzy for me (brutal honesty) but this one is fucking DEAD ON. Excellent job, this is going into my reference pile for grind and death.

First of all i'd like to mention that I liked the recording very much, everything is on its place, sounds adequate and cool!!! :notworthy :notworthy

And one question: how often the edit of guitar track is used when recording at this level, or is it used at all?
i.e. is it possible to play so accurately in 4 tracks? Or the timings such as the front of the guitar's attack should be corrected? And if yes, how should all this be done...manually or is there any software?

Thank you in advance!

There were sections in a few songs where I did edit the DIs before reamping. If I would have been present for the guitar tracking I would have gotten better takes for those sections rather than editing. There are parts however that are just easier to edit. Like some sustained single notes, or some ritardando sections. Just be sure to make all your edits to the DI tracks before you reamp.

JDavis, if I remember correctly, guitars were a 57 and an AE3000 both into the spider.

Thank you for your kind advices.

Haha, honestly im not really too happy with the toms. Everything was so rushed tom didn't really get the attention they could have used. Maybe a few hours total.

The only reason they sounds as good as they do is because we spent time on tuning and John knows how to hit them.

They're some old Pearl all maple kit with clear emperors. 12, 14, 16 I think.

Yeah Dave go ahead and make samples of those toms and post em. :notworthy lol

Yea, I only have 2 modules but I built them both. Did the A12 (API) first and it took me about 5 hours, me being pretty novice at soldering then. The N72 (Neve) took a little longer but I had more experience at that point so fewer issues.

I had fun building them but, make sure its something you want to do, get the right equipment, and have a whole day with no distractions for your first build. I don't have much experience with the originals, but these sound great to me and thats all that really matters.

Did you build your seventh circle stuff? was it a PITA? I've been considering building a couple of 72's or their api clone (or both)

werd, thanks for the info Dave, I feel a little better about trying it. I'd say my soldering skills are moderate. Michael Wagener swears by them, and he can use whatever he wants to, thats a pretty strong endorsement.(Not that you suck hahah!)
I've only used 72 clones, but I've used real APIs
