Nerd ramble...
DP - It can be an issue with single core chips - it is a non issue with dc. I like the NF430/410 / 6100 chipsets; integrated video solution. No probs even on single core. I'm not a fan of $250 video cards that need monster power supplies with dual rails.
As for RAM, buy the tightest timings you can afford. 2-3-3-6 is good, 2-2-2-5 better. No need for anything higher than PC3200 / DDR400 as most motherboards allow the use of a memory divider when overclocking. This allows you to run the FSB (front side bus) of the CPU nice and cranked, but drop the memory back to 166 or even 133 if need be to keep in spec.
Memory chips are much like flat panels. There are 3 major flat panel makers, everyone else buys them, and slaps their name on em. Much like ram. There are the Samsung TCCD chips (very very good) and then the Winbond BH5 chips, also quite good but run hotter. Companies buy up huge batches of the chips and use their own PCB's and make their ram.
My favorite ram right now is Patriot (TCCD chips) and the stuff is silly cheap. Newegg has the 2-3-2-5 2GB kits for $126 after a rebate right now. Patriot is a great company, though not as well known as the super expensive and hyped Corsair or OCZ though - which is a good thing, IMO.

If you want a wicked rig for cheap, these are my suggestions:
Biostar TForce6100-939 $70
2GB Patriot 2-3-2-5 $126
AMD Opteron 165 - $325
That is $520 for the core of the rig. The biostar deck has builtin video so no need to waste money on a video card, not to mention onboard RAID0/RAID0+1 sata controller! =) Figure another $160 for 2 x 250GB of sata2 storage, $140 on a good case and PSU and yer all set. Rocket ship 2.2Ghz dual core with 2GB RAM and 500GB of RAID0 storage for around $820...
And the Mac G5 2.3ghz dual core with 512MB ram and 250GB is $2,500 ?!?!??! WOW. =) I think I'd rather have an AMD rig and put the extra one thousand six hundred and eighty dollars into other things like.. a dual rec and an OD820.... a krankenstein... outboard gear... mic pres / mics... 119 12 packs of Heineken. =)
