I just finished recording this new song I just made. This time I spend more than usual time on the mixing, trying to get that heavy low end without being too boomy.

Guitars are quadtracked, used soloC into 8505 this time.

Bass is studio devil, but a kinda weird chain can explain if anybody is interested.

Drums is superior 2.0 except for the kick which is a blend of some sample from here.

How do you think it sounds?

killer sound !!! excelent mix man and yes please do share the details on bass :)

Thanks for the response everyone!

The bass was recorded with my 150 euro 4 string Harley benton bass, tuning is AGCF. Dunno about strings, never changed em since I bought it 9 months ago, maybe 105-45? Anyway I recorded using both pickups. Then duplicated the track.

First track is for low end: top studio devil -> bottom studio devil pic: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1063820/bass_low.PNG. Then lots of compression removing around 10 db with 10 ms attack 150 release 3.5 ratio. Then low pass at 220 hz.
Second track for distortion: top studio devil -> High pass filter at 300hz -> bottom studio devil pic: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1063820/bass_dist.PNG. Then compression with same settings as low end.

Both tracks are send into a bus with some eq, boosting 4-5 db from 110-190 hz, cutting 5 db at 400 hz, and low pass at 4500 hz.

I think using two amp sims in series gives it a smoother distortion rather then cranking the gain at one. Note that there is no high pass in the end of the distorted track, I think it sounds fuller if the distorted track have some low end to, especially at the 100-150 hz area.

Damn, I like it! Very good and grindy bass tone. The mix is balanced and I dig the guitar tone. Any change you can share the guitar-chain/settings?

Thanks man!

Here is my guitar chain: ibanez rgr321 with emg81 bridge(emg 89 neck using single coil mode for clean stuff) -> emu soundcard -> soloC -> 8505 -> s-preshigh. 4 tracks are sent to a gtr bus. Bus have the following eq: -2.5 400 hz with a narrow q (affecting somewhere between 300-500 hz). -2.3 at 411 hz with a wider q ( like 150-650), -3 db 4300 hz same q as the one at 411 hz. Hp 90hz, LP 11800hz. Then multiband compression 80-250 hz to remove some of the low end at palm mutes.

sinquestsound: Thanks, In the master chain I normally first have a compressor with 10 ms attack auto release removing around 4 db max. Then an EQ highpassing at 30 hz, to remove stuff I don't need and smoothen out the very lows. Then 2 instances of gclip removing a little bit of the snare/kick/toms transients each, then Voxengo Elephant. Finally I have Voxengo Span in the chain just to check out the levels and frequency balance. I usually adjust the 2 gclips to remove just enough transients to get the mix to -9 to -10 dbFS average with Elephant not reducing more than 3-4 db total.

Erkan: Yeah it's much easier to get the mids and lowmids decent with an ampsim when you tune very low. I always have problems with the mids when I tune higher like D or drop C, either too scooped or too honky.

Hi,
Exzem, Thanks for the info
i always have problem on master process, maybe you try master this short sample and post some info ??? FILE TO MASTER guitars its soloc and 8505 + rocktron gainiac 2 + randall rh100 with sm57 ;)

Stay Metall,

Dude, I wish I had more to say, but this track is amazing. The song, the mix, I love it all.
