For those who want to know why or how this works - Scion has obviously been very active in advertising its brand in the extreme music community lately, whether by sponsoring tours, festivals or in this case funding a band's recording fees under the condition that it is allowed to "brand" the cover.
This EP from a financial standpoint is an advertisement for Scion, which is why we're allowed to get it for free. If one person who goes to Scion Rock Fest, or downloads this EP buys a car, they've recouped most of the costs involved in this marketing campaign. The fact Scion has been doing this for so long lately lends me to believe that several cars have been purchased via this "advertising" method and that they have ultimately been successful in hitting the audience they need to hit. Not everyone needs to buy a car, but even if the minority does, they've been more effective than spending millions on a commercial.
This is the second time they financed and "released" a musical recording. The first was Magrudergrind's recent EP, which came under a TON of controversy given Magrudergrind's DIY punk ethos. However, I think it's a cool idea and am all for artist funding -- whether from the government or from "the man." I downloaded the EP yesterday and did not get around to listening to it, but I will. Enslaved has yet to disappoint me.
