New Pain of Salvation- full tune

I listened to America last night and laughed, hard. Is it just me, or does this song sound really poppy and almost comedic? Either way, it was pure garbage indeed. Though, perhaps DG did that on purpose.

I agree that it sounds pretty poppy and could indeed have a comedic (albeit a dark one) tone, based on my one listen while I was at work... but I'm never ready to dismiss anything that readily, esp. before the album comes out. I remember too vividly how I didn't like "This is the 21st century" (Marillion) when I listened to the available clips before Anorak came out. Now I adore the song. It just takes me time and context,I guess. *shrug* Thus, I usually listen to whatever's available a couple times (more out of sheer anticipation) and then wait for the album.

That said, is January here yet???

Well, actually, after a few listens, the tune is rather catchy and there are some interesting things going on with melody shifts and riffs. Certainly not one of their more polished numbers, though, and I found the vocals rather ragged and rushed. As for the lyrics, they appear to be purposely tounge-in-cheek, in-you-face kind of tease, but it comes off as a rather sophomoric attempt at inflammatory humor to me. American bashing, it's so overdone.

I agree with this comparison. I listened to the track and then listened to One Hour, and this does sound like a happy version of the One Hour style, especially the guitar themes. (West Side Story melodies notwithstanding)

I'm glad somebody else caught that. I suppose it can be forgiven as it is an ironic take on Bernstein's "America."

I'm gonna say I can't judge this on one song,but...that is the most godawful song POS has ever done! This from the band that wrote "A Perfect Element"???This may explain why the bassist left with his tail between his legs...Daniel has gone totally nutbag! After the last disc(which I do like) we stray further down the road of insanity

It was okay, but the lyrics make me REALLY want to hear that Team America song again.

TEAM AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!!!

Overall it seems a bit disjointed, almost an oxymoron of musical and lyrical content. Pretty happy sounding tune, both for PoS and for the opinions expressed within the song itself (from what I could make out, that is). Some of it I did enjoy, other parts had the "nails on chalkboard" effect. I honestly can't figure out where some of the choices in harmonies came from. To these ears they sound like they're in the wrong key in some places, hell, those sound completely whack. I'm sure it is/was intentional, but why? Then the extremely catchy choruses kick in, and I feel musically bitch slapped. Just... odd.

On the lyrical content side, I personally think some strong and valid points were made (again, from what I could make out ;) ). "Every day a new store - Every year a new war". Sad but true, even being rather generalized. I find it fascinating to learn of non-US perspectives about our country and hope that not too many people will be offended by Mr. Gildenlöw's perspective.

Exactly. I can't help but feel I'm being yanked around, musically. Screw the lyrics; use them to make a statement all you want, but make the music matter. This hurts. I feel like I'm being f'ed in every aspect. It's almost good; almost valid, but "Oh wait" we're going to throw this at you in some odd cadence, but ya can't bitch cause it's a political piece." Sorry, these guys are much better musically than this. Ok, enough on the one song. One and done; what's the rest like? I want to see more on the level of their musical talent and less on attitude...I hope.
