I've tried Grovers, Planet Waves, Gotohs (standard, not 510 series), and JinHo (cheap chinese maker... GFS sells them, and you can find them on eBay too, I believe they're the same maker that produced the generic non-locking cheapo tuners that came originally in my non-Prestige Ibanez SZ).
Grovers (non-locking 18:1's) are super smooth and super stable. They're not hard to come across for cheap on eBay too.
Gotohs (non-locking, non 510 series) on my Ibanez Prestige RGA are super stable too, but they're not as smooth as Grovers. These have a 16:1 ratio. They definitely look/feel super super well-built with great quality, tho, perhaps a bit mores than the previous.
Planet Waves locking tuners are smooth and stable too, and the auto-trim feature is super nice. I honestly thought Grovers were a tad smoother (on paper, they have the same gear ratio, tho), but just by a hair.
JinHo locking tuners have a VERY smooth feel to them (19:1 ratio), but they're definitely not nearly as stable as any of the previous tuners I mentioned. I found I had to re-tighten the thumbwheel quite frequently. Yeah, downside to cheap tuners, lol.
None of those have the hysteresis problem you mention. I did notice the problem on the cheapo generic tuners that came originally in one of my Ibanez's, so I do know what you mean.
All of those except for the JinHos get my recommendation, TBH. Both Grovers and Gotohs have locking versions too. However, if I were to get new tuning heads, I think I'd go for Gotoh 510's with the 21:1 gear ratio.
I see two downside to Sperzels, personally. I don't doubt they're very well-made, but, on paper, their gear ratio is only 12:1, which is kinda low. They're also not a drop-in replacement for like any guitar that doesn't come stock with them...
