I love this period of music. I love The Cure, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Siouxsie, Depeche Mode, blah blah blah. Even Duran Duran. I was into all of this kind of music before I discovered Black Metal or Death Metal and I still enjoy it. In real life, I might get my ass kicked at a show if someone knew that. But I can't change who I am, and I refuse to believe that these styles are talentless or emotionless. Not to say there's not a lot of shit in there, but many of my favorite bands of all time are from the late 70's and the 80's. Not all of it is your basic pop music either, there is a lot of experimental bands and I think goth music was a really fresh musical genre but quickly became stale and is more or less dead now (new bands that call themselves goth or goth metal are pretty much horrid).

Am I alone in my appreciation of these musical styles? Probably, but if not I'd like to know how other people like me feel about loving metal and new wave at the same time.

I don't see anything wrong with it. The Cure are a great band and Depeche Mode are pretty good (Haven't really heard much of the rest). I like a lot of very un-metal things like folk-rock a lot of pop and glam! Nothing wrong as long as you like METAL!!

(Not like someone HAS to, but then why be here, anyway)

Depeche Mode,Duran Duran,David Bowie,Blondie,Art of Noise,Scritti Politti,The Smiths,Bauhaus,Joy Division,Siouxsie and the Banshess....etc :D

I like everything mentioned and ultravox, visage, orchestral menouvres in the dark, echo and the bunnymen alsorts of stuff you name it if its eighties I love it

hhhhmmmm.....dont really like ne of them bands....but I do like The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Kansas etc. Bluegrass old country and punk and hardcore lol

I like other genres than metall to... I listen to folk-rock, goth, but also a little pop, a little techno/dance/trance, country, a little rap and many many other genres...
There`s always a time for everything.... (sorry my english)

I love "proper" goth...not what the idiot kids these days call goth. Fields of the Nephilim, The Cure...Christian Death, Skinny Puppy. Actually I like everything from Alien Sex Fiend to X-Mal Deutschland.

Depeche Mode are great.

Nice post, nice name.

...I do find Christian Death a little grating however. I've only heard the stuff with Rozz but I hear that nothing else worth listening to.

Love Alien Sex Fiend and Fields of the Nephilim and SKINNY PUPPY however (that album in particular rocks)

I completely forgot about this topic.

Well I only discovered goth about a year ago and I realy like the "modern goth" bands that I know like Nightwish or Evanesence,Within Temptation, Elis, Angelzoom, Epica, Lunatica, Darmoon, Moonspell, Eeriness...

I love DM, Cure and The Smith. got influenced by my older sisters when i was a little child. there was no escape. ;-)

I have all the Cure albums up through Disintigration. They went a bit too pop for my tastes. The Smiths were cool but I mainly liked Johnny Marr's guitar work- How Soon Is Now is amazing.

MManson did Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics and there's a new Depece Mode cover song too. I bet a lot of young metal bands could do killer Cure covers if they weren't too obsessed with being 'hard.'

And imho the Cocteau Twins are one of the greatest bands of all time.

I love The Cure and Duran Duran. I would most probably be slated for the music I listen to now - I still love metal, still heavily into doom metal, and I'm loving The Killers and Björk right now. And is it just me, or does anyone else think that Eminem - Like Toy Soldiers is a good catchy song?

Carpathian Forest did an awesome cover of The Cure's 'A Forest' it's not black-metallish sounding aat all. If that's what you mean of a metal band doing a Cure cover without sounding hard :)

Gothic rock and darkwave is one of my favorite genres (bet you couldn't tell from my icon ;) ). Some great current bands playing gothic rock music are Bella Morte, Empire Hideous, Faith & the Muse, and The Last Dance. I recommend them highly to anyone who already likes gothic music, or someone new just wanting to hear what the genre is about. Since all of those bands are guitar-oriented, I think they might appeal to metal fans interested in hearing something a little different.
