If a pal (or just someone you know, for those of us who have no friends!) were to get into metal and wanted a list of five albums to listen to to get a good idea of what sort of stuff to listen to, what would those five albums be?

The few 'Metal Heads' I know, including myself, all got into it through Maiden..

Live After Death did it for me, but some may argue it sounds too 80'sish.

Motley Crue Greatest Hits will bring almost anyone around. Unfortunatly it's mainly Glam so they may not enjoy the heavier stuff.

Brutal Planet helped my girlfriend appreciate metal - although I'll admit I basically rammed my taste of music down her throat from day 1

You have to prgress to do it proper,
1.start with something classic, like Black Sabbath or Deep Purple
2. Maiden
3.Slayer
4.tesament
5.Cryptopsy

they they will be so hooked and love everystyle of metal, which is good.

Start with Iron Maiden and old Metallica. Every other band can be referenced from those 2!

To give the people a good idea of the types of metal I listen to, and to show them that metal does NOT have to sound like Slipknot (eg. noise), I would choose:

Judas Priest - Painkiller (the sound on this sums up "heavy metal" for me, even though I've still only heard 7 tracks from it LOL)

Demons & Wizards - Demons & Wizards (to show how melodic and moving heavy metal can be)

Megadeth - Rust In Peace (to introduce the person to thrash through the best thrash band ever's best album)

Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil (gotta throw in some glammy heavy metal somewhere, and this album just oozes with nasty LA metal attitude more than anything, along with WASP's debut)

Metallica - Metallica (this album got probably 75% of metalheads my age into it in the first place LOL) :D

HAIL & KILL!

Troops, are you mad? RIP RULES! But the best thrash album SURELY has to go to reign in blood!
Slipknot Rules! :D
The black album, I forgot about that, tell them to start with that one!

And RIP is about 150,000 times better than the black album too. :)

LIAR!!! :D

I should point out that RIP rules, but the black album and reign in blood are 2 of my most cherished albums :D

Back onto the point of this thread somewhat....

1) Heaven And Hell - Black Sabbath. This enables the 'newboy' to experience Sabbath's riffs with Ronnie James Dio's vocals - a 2 for 1 special.

2) Among The Living - Anthrax. Heavy as, and not lacking for speed, will introduce Charlie Benante's drumming and song writing to 'newboy'

3) Piece Of Mind - Iron Maiden. The album that got me into metal. Has right balance of everything, from 'Where Eagles Dare' to 'To Tame A Land'

4) Ride The Lightning - Metallica. Side 1 (when I originally bought it on vinyl all those years ago) is just magnificent - Fight Fire With Fire, Ride The Lightning, For Whom The Bell Tolls and Fade To Black got played over and over again....

5) Difficult to choose just one more.....
Take your pick from :

Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II - Helloween
Land Of The Free - Gamma Ray
Reign In Blood - Slayer.

Gee, wonder if I grew up in the eighties.....

Hmmm...

Wrathy's recipe for instant metalhead consists of the following vital ingredients:

Combine Alive! and Double Platinum in a CD changer, sprinkle with Back In Black, add some self-titled Van Halen, stir in any of the classic Maiden albums from 82-88, garnish liberally with Iced Earth and season with Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to taste.

Serve with headphones, air guitars and black T-shirts and you can't go wrong :).

Hahahahaha Wrathy!!!!! :D

Unfortunately I'm unable to lie because of an evil birthday wish by a small child... which means if I can only speak the truth Rust In Peace MUST be way better! :D
