Next mixing context - Deadline August 12, 2006 @ Midnight

heres a link to my mix. I am new here to hello everyone.

This was mixed on Nuendo, using a mixture of Waves plugs, Waves SSL plugs, UAD 1, Sonalksis EQ, Amplitube, Guitar Suite

Minimal limiting on the mix bus so maybe not as loud as others but all you got to do is turn it up a little..........i like snare transients too much!

BTW force them to record to a click-trying to work out BPM when the drummer isn't accenting on the downbeat is a nighmare ;-)

It will never happen. Drummers in this area refuse to use a click. Must be geo-specific DNA issue.

interesting..........tell them that Dave Lombardo uses a click all the time :heh:

Dude, I've tried it all. They just won't do it.

It's a shame too. Mark is an incredible drummer.

FYI - This contest is almost over!! Big prizes (none really) but hey, you get to brag if you win!

Info

I used In Flames for a reference one the first one(its a bit more scooped with thicker bass)and Deliverance for the other

I did some edits but these takes need many more--especially on the guitar gallops. I fixed the out of tune harmonies. I pitch shifed the main vox down an octive and blended that in with the original. Personaly I feel this song needs to be bass dominated because of the guitar discrepancies and because there are only about 4 bar chords in the whole song(all single notes playing that are not double tracked ). Make him do the lead again. Also tell the chorus singer to add another take very close to the mic using a high degree of rasp--the lowend of that can be blended in to thicken him up. also, I didnt have time to go back an de-ess the vox.

Hi,

i read about that mixing contest last week but i did not have any time to jump. So i decided to do a very uncommon oldschool mix "out of competition" cause the deadline is over.

There are many pro sounding mixes around, so i did not try to make a pro sounding one, instead of that i tried to do everything "vice versa".

I guess i have the most ugly guitar tone in that contest!!

I did not have the time to reamp and stuff so i tried to use the PoCo Tubifex for that task. Haha, i ended up with some kind of Stoner-Rock Sound, little like old Kyuss/Queens of the Stoneage...

The mix was done in 2-3 hours last sunday evening, i changed a few details this morning as well as i did not master too hot.

Sorry for doing everything in a rush, i guess it's the most un-pro mix here because of that.

But i like it in some way, sounds little lika mixture out of old Metalchurch, Kyuss, Maiden and modern Metal Core.

Cause i did not trigger the Snare and the Toms they are sounding most realistic in those fucked up drumrolls during that guit-solo etc.

Listen to that guitarintro after the solo, it sounds pure shit with the sound i dialed!

That mix needs alot of editing and gain riding, but i don't have time ATM. The Vox (the chrunshy ones) are realy bad... The third guitar could benefit of individual level-settings as well.

I am not shure if i realy want to post that mix, but maybe some might have some fun with it! And i don't want to take part with that in this contest. Just fun fun fun!!

>>expired Yousenditlink deleted<<

EDIT:

After finishing a project and beeing away for 10 days i reopened that mix today and did some changes, mainly in the guitar-sound. FUN!

I uploaded that track to my server cause those yousendit stuff is expiring so fast...

and here a NOT SO HOT mastered "oldschool" version (wich i like much more) Just crank up the volume!! Ad enjoy s_p_a_c_e and DyNAmIX!

and finaly a HOT version - slammed... Like some others i heard here. I don't like it much cause that sound did not fit to the fucked up old school mix.

i'll finish and upload my mix in a few hours... i didn't make the deadline because:
- i was out of town for 5 days
- i'm lazy :embarrased:
- i wasn't satisfied with it - i'm still not - and i started over 1000 times

edit: and here it is.
i'm not extremely happy about it, especially the snare :erk:, but, for a first effort (my first time with a 'real' mix, with multitracked drums and pro-sounding tracks), it's ok i guess...
i didn't squash it alot at mastering, didn't spend too much time during mastering (~10 minutes :erk:) and didn't want to ruin it :P

No. I dropped the ball on it. I never figured out a good way to handle the voting process.

That's sad! There are so many buddys who spent a lot of effort to their mixes. I once had a quick read through the complete topic.

Maybe there is a way to create a poll where everyone can vote?
I just don't know. But you're right, that is so hard to give a vote. One mix might sound high-end, but the other is more ballanced, another is mastered good and hot and will easily outperform a not-mastered mix wich might be the better one but still need a mastering. It's not easy ;-)

What about the band?

It might be a cool way to create a CD with all tracks lined up with SAME listening volume, i mean - you have to adjust levels - dropping the level of very hot mastered versions. That way the "loud sounds better" syndrom is out of the way and they can choose the mix they like most.

A few issues:

1. There are over 20 entries and this forum only allows 20 max poll options.
2. Some mixes are complete and some are not.
3. Even an entry that was not the best mix, some deserve credit for "producing" too because they rearranged the song in some instances. Kudos to them. I thought that was way cool.

The band and I already agree that CJWall had the best mix overall. In fact, he is set to mix their next full length CD that we begin tracking this weekend.

I did post all the tracks but I kept screwing up and leaving IDTag info. Honestly, I just ran out of time. I think it's cool that by posting raw tracks I was able to secure two great mixers for three of my projects. Splatt88 and CJWall were both hired to mix two projects and I plan to keep using them as long as they let me. They both have a great ear for mixing.

So in my best Eric Cartman voice: We are all winners, but I do what I want! :)

Seriously, I'll keep thinking of ideas.
